Breaking down the new shots from Amazon’s special look at The Rise of Skywalker

Amazon recently released a special look at The Rise of Skywalker, and the video takes a look back at the saga from a behind-the-scenes perspective. There are interviews with J.J. Abrams, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac, and these include interviews both old and new.

The video is intended to give a sense of this four decades long saga coming to a close with the release of Episode IX, but it also gave us a few new glimpses from the upcoming film!

I’ll break down the new shots we got in this special look; I’m going to do a bit of speculation, so if you don’t want potential spoilers about the film, don’t read any further!

There are some behind-the-scenes photos of Rey in the desert, and it certainly looks like they’re filming the scene that we saw in the first trailer, of Rey readying to face Kylo Ren’s approaching TIE Whisper.

We haven’t seen a ton of Mark Hamill in the promotion of this film (probably simply because he doesn’t have a ton of screentime, but still you’d think he’d be more prominent in the promotion of the final film of the saga). But here, we see Hamill on set with Oscar Isaac and John Boyega, giving them both hugs.

Don’t read too much into this, because Hamill spent time on set for both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi even on scenes and sets he wasn’t a part of, so don’t take this to mean that he’s necessarily in scenes with Finn and Poe. But it’s still cool to see.

Rey smiles at Chewbacca and gives him a hug. It’s hard to tell for certain whether this is an actual scene being filmed for the movie or whether it’s the actors embracing after a scene, but I think it’s safe to say that Rey probably does share a moment with Chewie in the film, so it’s very possibly from that.

We’ve frequently seen the shot of the heroes arriving on Pasaana, but this is a new shot from that same sequence, as the heroes all turn to look at C-3PO. My guess is that he says something that makes the others stop and turn to face him.

C-3PO and R2-D2! The two beloved droids are seen together in this shot by Poe’s orange X-Wing (and in front of the Millennium Falcon) on Ajan Kloss, and we hear 3PO saying, “I want you to know that you have been a real friend, R2. My best one, in fact.” I wonder if the audio is from the sequence of 3PO taking one last look at his friends (which I presume is before he gets his memory wiped for some reason), and that he will share an emotional moment with R2.

As for the shot of 3PO and R2 in front of Poe’s X-Wing, I’m not sure when this takes place, but we do know that R2 flies with Poe in that X-Wing, so maybe it’s connected to that?

Poe and Finn share a moment, with them giving each other a pat on the shoulder. Poe is wearing his orange flight suit and looks to be heading toward his X-Wing, and we can see Resistance people working on the ship. I’m assuming that they’re getting the ship ready to fly, probably into the final battle (since Poe is wearing his flight suit, which he does during the battle but doesn’t earlier in the film as far as we can tell). So this is probably Poe and Finn encouraging one another before the final fight – and perhaps saying their goodbyes just in case?

Leia hands the Skywalker lightsaber to Rey, who reaches out her hands to receive it. We have previously seen Leia holding the lightsaber on Ajan Kloss, and it has since been confirmed that Leia is the one continuing Rey’s training at the beginning of the film. I think it would be pretty cool if Leia is the one to repair the lightsaber that once belonged to her father and brother, giving it back to Rey, and this shot would fit with that. However, I’m not sure why it would have taken Rey a year to get this fixed, so I’m not convinced that’s actually the case.

Regardless of what’s going on here, though, It’s a very cool moment to see Leia giving the lightsaber with so much legacy to her family to Rey, entrusting her to continue on not just the Jedi but the Skywalker legacy as well.

In a behind-the-scenes shot, we see Finn and Jannah jumping to avoid an explosion. Based on the set it seems that this is on the Star Destroyer, so the question is whether this is an explosion that they triggered or not.

Poe flies his X-Wing in the final battle, and he shouts, “C’mon!” as he works the controls. We see an X-Wing evade three TIE Fighters in the fight.

The Millennium Falcon travels through hyperspace. Right before this was shown the shot of Poe saying, “last jump, maybe forever!”, so it’s possible that this is the Falcon traveling back to Ajan Kloss after that mission?

There’s a brief new addition to Rey and Kylo fighting on the Star Destroyer (I assume), in the same room where Vader’s helmet is located.
