Breaking down some of the various TV spots for The Rise of Skywalker!

So far, I’ve been keeping up with the publicly released TV spots from Star Wars for the upcoming The Rise of Skywalker, but there have been plenty of official TV spots from the film that have aired that haven’t been uploaded to the official Youtube channel.

Thankfully, Zcure1 on Twitter does tremendous work and captures all of these TV spots, and so in this article I’m going to be breaking down the exciting new footage in some of these spots!

Specifically, this article will feature shots from the International Trailer, TV spot 17, TV spot 21, TV spot 25, TV spot 26, and TV spot 28! The quality of some of the images aren’t great, as this isn’t footage officially released online but only on TV, but it’s still pretty good and it definitely works. We’ll also look at brief shots fromanother TV spot posted to Youtube, as well as a brief one posted by Star Wars nine (IX) days before the film’s release.

Let’s break down the new stuff! And if you’ve missed my breakdowns of any of the previous trailers or TV spots, you can find links to them at the bottom of the article.

To start with, let’s look at one shot from this TV spot. You might note that this TV spot is very similar to the “Forever” spot released by Star Wars, but curiously this shot is missing from that spot (there’s a shot of Lando in the “Forever” one that isn’t in this one, though). And this shot is a very interesting one: Rey holds up a dagger, presumably looking at the remains of the second Death Star.

This is from the same location that we saw the heroes at in the very first teaser trailer, but this time we see Rey holding up this dagger. So is that what’s in the bag she’s carrying? Interestingly, I think we also see this dagger in another shot too, as Rey has it when she and Kylo destroy Vader’s mask. So I wonder if this dagger might play an important role in the film, or at least play a pivotal role once they get to the Death Star. She’s looking pretty intently at the dagger, so perhaps it helps her understand what to do or where to go? And I wonder if it’s connected to Palpatine in any way?

A TV spot released by Star Wars marking nine (IX) days until the movie’s releaseincluded shots we’ve already seen before, but it also had this new shot of Leia! Here she looks quite concerned as other Resistance members (we see Rose and Beaumont Kin in the background, along with others). It looks like they’re at the Resistance base, but what is Leia so concerned about?

We get a few new angles of the speeder chase on Pasaana, mainly of the speeders avoiding an explosion and blaster fire. But nothing major that’s new here.

This is brand new, as the sequence appeared in the international trailer and we hadn’t seen anything of it previously. Poe and Chewbacca pilot the Millennium Falcon in this strange green space (and note Finn and Klaud in the cockpit with them), pursued by TIE Fighters. But they encounter this space creature, kinda looking like an eel-like creature or something. This giant creature tries to eat them, and Poe exclaims, “Last jump, maybe forever!” as the Falcon then jumps to hyperspace, escaping the TIEs and the creature.

I’m guessing that this sequence is from the beginning of the film, as it seems that Poe, Finn, and Chewie are on a mission in the Falcon that includes an ice corridor on what we assume is that ice asteroid. They’re pursued by TIEs there, and so I’m guessing that this is a related sequence. It looks very interesting and ominous, and we’ve now seen ships flying both in green space and red space. I like the fact that this film looks incredible visually, but also like it’ll do some things we haven’t really seen on the big screen.

Several of the TV spots give us an up-close look at Poe Dameron flying his X-Wing, and in one of them he says, “Take my lead!” I’m guessing that this is probably part of the final battle, which I’m assuming Poe will have a significant role in. But these shots also confirm something else too: you might notice that in a couple of these shots, we can see R2-D2 in Poe’s X-Wing!!  This is something we had seen in merchandise previously, but it now seems confirmed through official footage, that R2 flies with Poe in this battle. It makes sense (as BB-8 is with Finn and Jannah attacking the Star Destroyer), and it’s also really cool and exciting.

It’s Chewie!

It’s BB-8, on Ajan Kloss!

We get a few new glimpses of the attack atop the Star Destroyer, including Sith Troopers arriving at the fight! They are dropped off on the top of the Destroyer on what looks like First Order Transports, so are they not actually on the Star Destroyer being attacked, or is this just the easiest way to deploy them? We then get a shot of a Sith Trooper, standing in front of flames, firing at something off-screen. Then we also have new shots of Finn, Jannah, and Resistance soldiers running on the Destroyer’s surface, and we see Sith Troopers in the background (including some of them that appear to have fallen).

I think this could be a really cool firefight, and I would guess that it’s a desperate attack launched by the Resistance, and that these forces have to fight their way past these menacing Sith Troopers in order to get inside.

We see Resistance ships arriving at the battle, and lighting surrounds them. As I’ve mentioned previously, the lightning appears to come from below rather than above, which is interesting. I wonder if that ties into Palpatine at all?

It’s a new shot of C-3PO, at a Resistance base!

LANDO! These TV spots have given us a few new looks at Lando Calrissian. The first sees him in a different outfit than we’ve seen him in previously, as he wears a patterned robe of sorts. He’s in an interesting place, and it’s really hard to make out where exactly he might be. But the closest guess I have is that it might be Pasaana? And if that’s the case, then maybe he appears in the film a bit earlier than some expect?

The second shot is a bit more definitive, and it’s great. We see Lando seated at the Resistance headquarters, with some soldiers standing behind him, and he kinda shrugs. It’s great, and it’s totally Lando. I’m so glad he’s back!

Poe addresses the Resistance, and though we’ve seen similar shots before, we do get a new line of dialogue from Poe: “What our mothers and fathers fought for, today we make our last stand!” It’s pretty cool that in the TV spot, while the line “what our mothers and fathers fought for” is said we see shots of Leia and Lando, which I thought was a nice touch. But this line helps us understand that this fight has been going on for a while. We know that Poe’s parents were fighters in the Rebellion, and I’m sure that is true of many other Resistance fighters as well. This is the fight that’s been going on for decades. Palpatine is back, the First Order rose from the ashes of the Empire, and so these heroes get the opportunity to take up the fight that many of their parents participated in.

Also: it’s cool to get a really brief look at Rose, seen here to the right of the screen looking at Poe.

There’s a shot of Kylo Ren putting on his helmet, and we see the Knights of Ren faintly in the background. I’m guessing then that this is right after the mask is re-forged (which we glimpse in a previous trailer), and so he puts it on in front of the Knights of Ren. We know that he loves that helmet, and that it makes him feel a bit like Vader, but I also wonder whether there’s a significance to this helmet with the Knights of Ren (since they too all wear helmets)? Maybe that’s why they’re standing by watching this happen.

We have previously seen Rey and Kylo Ren standing facing one another in the Emperor’s Throne Room aboard the second Death Star, but here we catch a glimpse of them fighting there. Except Kylo isn’t using his lightsaber, and Rey twirls and swings her lightsaber at Kylo. The footage cuts off just before it hits, but it certainly looks like Rey strikes a blow against Kylo here. This is very interesting.

There are a number of new shots of the Millennium Falcon in these spots. For one, we see Poe flying the ship with Chewie, and he turns to the Wookiee and says, “Sorry, I’m sorry, I know!” In a later shot we see that the Falcon has actually been flying upside down in this ice tunnel and then makes the turn to be rightside up, so I wonder if Poe’s trying to get the hang of flying the ship? He’s flown it before (in Spark of the Resistance), but maybe he has a bit of trouble here in the midst of the fight. Regardless, he’s apologizing to Chewie for something.

We also get new shots of the Falcon flying through this ice tunnel, pursued by TIE Fighters, and one of the TIEs crashes into something and explodes, which gets an, “ooh!” response from Finn.

In that final battle against the Sith fleet, we see TIEs pursuing a ship and destroying it.

On Ajan Kloss, Rey approaches Poe and asks, “How’d it go?” Poe responds, “Really bad, actually!” The TV spot makes this seem a bit humorous, but I think Poe is actually upset. Something didn’t go right.

So here’s my guess, trying to put things together: Finn, Poe, and Chewie take the Falcon on a mission to this ice asteroid at the beginning of the film and wind up being pursued by TIEs and encountering this giant space creature, so things don’t go well. Meanwhile, Rey is on Ajan Kloss training with Leia. When Poe and the others return, not feeling too good about their mission, Rey then joins them on their new mission, which probably takes them to Pasaana and gets the main plot of the film going. I kinda feel like we have a decent understanding of the beginning of the film, and that’s my attempt at putting things together.

We get two new views of Rey, Finn, and Poe aboard the Star Destroyer. The first is of them walking, and it looks like this is probably either right before or right after that sequence in which Rey uses a Jedi mind trick on the stormtroopers.

The second shot is much more interesting, as we see the three heroes running out of the Falcon down the ramp with their guns blazing. Is this how they arrive on the Star Destroyer? Do they come out fighting? If so, then so much for stealth!

This is a really cool new shot of the final battle, as we see the Millennium Falcon leading ships across the screen. But also note that one of those ships is a U-Wing, which is the first time we’ve seen confirmation that the Resistance has U-Wings at their disposal too! So it really looks like J.J. Abrams is pulling out all the stops here, as we’ve got X-Wings, A-Wings, B-Wings, Y-Wings, and U-Wings all showing up!

This shows us the completion of Rey’s flip, which is kinda cool since that was part of the very first footage seen from this film, in the very first trailer! She does her backflip over Kylo’s charging TIE, and we see her then hang in the air and come down.

In my opinion, this is the coolest new shot we get in these TV spots. We’ve mentioned a lot that this battle between Rey and Kylo on the Death Star ruins has appeared in a lot of the trailers and TV spots, but we keep getting slightly different angles of it. That’s true in some of these spots as well, as we get one shot from above with the waves crashing, and then another of Rey swinging her lightsaber at Kylo (as we’ve said, it looks like Rey is being the more aggressive of the two in a lot of these fights). But then we get the thrilling shot: Kylo Ren swings his lightsaber at Rey, and she uses the Force to stop it!!!

This is a really cool moment, and it’s a really awesome display of Rey’s power. But it’s also a bit poetic, because if you remember, the first time Kylo meets Rey in The Force Awakens, he uses the Force to pin back her arm so that she can’t fire her blaster at him any more. Here, Rey is turning the tables on Kylo by using the Force to hold back his arm/lightsaber so that he can’t strike her with it.

In short: Rey is awesome, and I can’t wait to see this film!
