On Tuesday, Star Wars released yet another TV spot for The Rise of Skywalker, and this too contains new footage we hadn’t seen previously.
Check it out here:
Like we’ve been doing, let’s take a look at the new shots included in this trailer, and I’ll speculate on what it could mean where applicable. And if you’ve missed any of my breakdowns of the released footage, you can find links to them at the bottom of the article.
The first new shot we get is of Rey training in the jungle of Ajan Kloss (presumably), which we’ve seen in other footage too. In the trailer we saw her training with a training droid, which is pretty cool, but here she spins around and uses her staff to hit the droid right into a tree.
One thing that’s interesting to me is that Rey is training with her staff rather than her lightsaber in much of the footage we’ve seen from these (or related) sequences. I’m not sure that necessarily means anything, but at the same time what if the Skywalker lightsaber is actually repaired during her training? This would be a long time to wait to repair the lightsaber (a year), so it might not be the most practical or make the most sense, but it’s a thought that at least crossed my mind.
Poe Dameron is flying the Millennium Falcon with Chewbacca, and he jerks his head up and looks at Chewie, with a look on his face that seems to be a mix of confusion or concern. If we’re right about other footage, piecing things together this would likely be from early in the film when it appears Poe, Finn, and Chewie embark on a mission together. It’ll be pretty cool to see Poe pilot the Falcon.
It seems that this is from the same mission, and this is actually from that scene that we saw in a previous TV spot, of TIE Fighters chasing the Falcon. It’s again hard to tell exactly where this is (though it looks to be a corridor or sorts?), but we see Finn swiveling as he operates the gun, and then we see the guns as TIEs fire at the Falcon.
The biggest new footage in this TV spot is of Rey and Kylo Ren. They’re in this white chamber that we’ve seen before, and we can clearly see off to the right of the screen there is a shrine of sorts for the charred remains of Darth Vader’s helmet. That suggests to me that this fight is taking place inside Kylo’s quarters aboard his Star Destroyer, and this fits too since we know that Rey, Finn, Poe, and Chewie (and maybe others) wind up aboard a Destroyer at some point. Rey meets up with Kylo, and we know that in the course of this fight the two of them will destroy Vader’s helmet. But here we get the beginning (presumably) of the fight, as the two stand opposite one another, lightsabers ignited.
And fitting with the other material we’ve seen so far, it actually looks like Rey is the aggressor here. She is the one to take the first step toward Kylo here, and it looks like he actually initially takes a step back when she does. In other words: though Kylo Ren is the Supreme Leader of the First Order and is clearly a villain when the film starts, it sure looks like he’s not just out here aggressively trying to fight Rey. This will be an interesting dynamic in the film, for sure.
There’s a brief new glimpse of a First Order trooper making a slight jump while driving one of the speeders on Pasaana.
Poe Dameron talks at the gathering of Resistance fighters, with Finn standing just to his right. We hear a new line of dialogue from Poe, saying, “We won’t surrender. We make our last stand.” Based on what we’ve seen and heard of this sequence, this is most likely the final pep talk before the Resistance heads into the final battle against Palpatine’s Sith fleet. And at this point, it looks like Poe is essentially leading the Resistance…
In the trailer we saw an awesome shot of Poe, Finn, and Chewie running down a Star Destroyer hallway firing at stormtroopers, and this TV spot gives us a different angle of it, showing us the heroes up close as they make their way through. This looks to be aboard a Star Destroyer, so it’s probably the same one Rey’s in too.
Speaking of a Star Destroyer, Finn doesn’t just infiltrate one on the inside, but he also attacks one from the outside. He and Jannah lead a Resistance attack on the hull of a Star Destroyer and are met by Sith Troopers, engaging in a firefight. Here, we see Finn and Jannah (she’s in the background behind Finn), and Finn fires at something off-screen. He’s also holding something around his arm that I can’t exactly tell what it is. Maybe explosives?
Poe looks through some blinds at something, but it’s hard to really tell what’s going on here (or even where it is). At least we know C-3PO is with him! The inside of this place looks a lot like a ship, but the outside (well, what we can see) looks like it could be on Pasaana. So… is this a ship on Pasaana?
