Breaking down the latest TV spot for The Rise of Skywalker, including a look at the Knights of Ren!

We are just 25 days away from seeing the conclusion to the Skywalker Saga!!!!

I absolutely can’t wait, and Star Wars recently released a brand new TV spot for The Rise of Skywalker with some exciting new footage.

Let’s break down what we see and learn!

This TV spot begins (and ends) with the fight between Rey and Kylo Ren among the ruins of the Death Star, as Rey stands ready, watching Kylo walk through the waves and twirl his lightsaber. This sequence seems to be one of the money shots, as some form of it has been appearing in pretty much all of the marketing material – as has the line from Luke Skywalker saying, “confronting fear, it’s the destiny of a Jedi. Your destiny.”, which we hear as a voiceover during this opening sequence in the TV spot.

This is the money shot of this TV spot, though, as we get our first real look at the Knights of Ren! We got a photo of them in the Vanity Fair issue earlier this year, but even then it was a behind the scenes photo with director J.J. Abrams. And since then, we’ve seen the Knights of Ren in various merchandise, but we now finally have seen them in actual footage! It’s a pretty awesome shot, too, as we see them (there’s six of them) standing on a ledge as the camera pans around. It looks like they are on Pasaana, and it’s actually kinda evocative of that hero shot on Pasaana (we’ll see it later in this TV spot too) with Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, C-3PO, and BB-8 arriving. I wonder if this is when the Knights of Ren arrive to hunt down the Resistance heroes already there?

Ok, so this is pretty cool. In the previous TV spot released recently, we saw that the First Order uses some sort of speeder on wheels to ride through the desert of Pasaana, but this TV spot reveals that this speeder is more than meets the eye: the back end of the speeder flips up and launches a First Order jet trooper off of it into the air, and the trooper then takes off flying.

We saw this shot in the recent TV spot as well, and this too is from the speeder chase on Pasaana. Rey and Chewbacca pilot one of the speeders, and an angry Rey turns and fires back, presumably at the pursuing First Order forces.

We see C-3PO (with Rey and Finn looking on) in the same droid shop that has been featured in a lot of other footage, and this is when I’m guessing 3PO’s memory is wiped for an important reason. This time, though, we actually get a new line from 3PO, saying, “If this mission fails, it was all for nothing.” That’s pretty bleak, but it’s also fairly standard to set the stakes like that: basically, either our heroes win or else everything else fails. And that’s the case about the fight in The Rise of Skywalker, as I’m sure if they fail to stop Palpatine the galaxy’s fate will be decided – and not in a good way.

In this context, however, I think C-3PO is probably talking about something else. Think about it: if we’re right in thinking that he’s about to have his memory wiped, then it has to be for some incredibly important reason in an attempt to win this war. So he’s basically saying that if his friends don’t complete this mission, then him sacrificing his memory was all for nothing. Talk about emotional stakes.

It’s Palpatine’s fleet, with lightning flashing in the background, posing an ominous threat.

Finn and Jannah sit in the cockpit of a ship looking seriously at something, and it appears they’re probably witnessing the gathered Sith fleet or something like that, based on what’s going on outside the cockpit. But we’ll see.

Kylo! We haven’t really seen him doing a ton in the footage so far (besides that fight with Rey, of course), but here we get a pretty legit shot of him stabbing someone with his lightsaber while he looks another direction and uses the Force. This is the same location as that brief shot from the first trailer, when Kylo slams a person into the ground. You can make out a stormtrooper in the background, and it looks like the First Order has attacked this world. So here we get the Supreme Leader in action, and it looks like he’ll display some exciting moves in battle as he fights.

We’ve already seen this shot, and it looks like the planet Kijimi being blasted. My guess is that it’s one of those Star Destroyers from the Sith fleet (since it looks like they have modified canons) blasting the planet’s surface.

The heroes arrive on Pasaana for a festival. Once again, these shots seem to be some of the money shots that occupy a place in much of the footage released.

We’ve heard this line before from Poe Dameron: “We’re not alone. Good people will fight if we lead them.” But I believe this is the first time we’ve actually seen him saying it. He stands alongside Finn, and I’m guessing this is the same scene that has the Resistance gathered together in that hangar – presumably as a sort of pep talk before the big final battle.

We’ve seen this shot already too, as Rose looks on concerned at something, with Connix and Dominic Monaghan’s character standing in the background. As others have noted, it looks like there might be an Orbak getting loaded into a transport in the background, so perhaps she’s getting ready to say goodbye to Finn before his dangerous mission to attack a Star Destroyer?

Finn, Jannah, and BB-8 race into the fight, riding Orbaks atop a Star Destroyer!

Here’s a new shot, and it’s very interesting! We see a fight atop a Star Destroyer, and it looks like Sith Troopers (to the right of the screen) are fighting Finn and Jannah (to the left of the screen), presumably trying to stop their attack. So probably at some point, Finn and Jannah disembark from their Orbaks and have to blast their way into the ship trying to take it down, and the Sith Troopers are deployed to stop them. Everything about this sequence just looks like such a cool action moment.

We see the shot of Kylo and Rey standing in what looks like the Emperor’s Throne Room aboard the Death Star remains.

This is our first actual footage of Sith Troopers! We’ve obviously seen a lot of them in marketing material, but this is the first time we’re seeing them in any of the footage released. It’s a bit hard to tell anything about what’s going on here, but I wonder if this could be part of that same sequence as earlier where they’re trying to repel Finn and Jannah’s attack? Regarldess of what’s happening, they’re definitely in battle, as the Sith Trooper at the front of the picture here looks to be shot.

In the space battle, an X-Wing and an A-Wing fly at one another and narrowly miss, and then we get another shot of the fleet charging toward a Star Destroyer. Like I’ve said ever since we glimpsed this battle, it looks incredible and I can’t wait to see it play out on the big screen!!

A new shot of Poe Dameron wearing his flight suit, perhaps flying in this massive battle? My question is whether R2-D2 is flying with him

Like I said earlier, this TV spot begins and ends with Rey and Kylo on the Death Star ruins, and we’ve seen this fight in pretty much all the footage released. This time, we get a few brief glimpses that are new, as we see it from slightly different angles (including a pretty cool one from behind Kylo’s back of Rey swinging to attack).
