In The Rise of Skywalker, Poe Dameron has a new X-Wing.
This is needed, since Black One was destroyed in The Last Jedi. But Poe’s new fighter is painted orange, and I think it looks awesome. We got our first look at it in one of the new items available to purchase on Triple Force Friday, as it’s a toy version of Poe’s ship:
I don’t know about you, but I think that X-Wing looks sick. I love the orange look, and I think it fits Poe Dameron perfectly. So I’m super excited to see it in action in TROS, but there’s something potentially much more interesting about this X-Wing.
It’s not evident in that toy pictured above, but in other merchandise, R2-D2 is seen in Poe Dameron’s ship flying with the Resistance pilot.
For example, this replica of Poe’s X-Wing will be released in December, and R2 is there.
Or then there was an image of a TROS bedding set leaked on the Star Wars Leaks subreddit, and there’s a blanket with Poe’s X-Wing on it – that features R2 in the ship.
So what could this mean?
First, let’s get this possibility out of the way: it is possible that these items are just taking liberties and putting a ‘random’ astromech droid in the fighter and that they never intended for it to be R2. But I find this a bit hard to believe, especially since it’s on multiple items. This wouldn’t just be the case of one of them doing it. Besides, if one were to want a droid in there, the obvious choice would be BB-8.
That suggests to me that perhaps this is something that actually happens in the film. While we’ve seen a lot of C-3PO so far in the promotional stuff for the film, we’ve seen pretty much nothing about R2-D2. That has worried many fans that maybe, despite this being the final film of the Skywalker Saga, the iconic droid won’t play too big of a role. I’m still a bit concerned about that. But it would be really cool if R2-D2 flies with Poe Dameron in his X-Wing in a pivotal point, as that would provide a ton of poetry for the saga, with R2 being a part of so many space battles. So I actually think that would be really cool.
I know that BB-8 and Poe Dameron have a special connection and I’d hate to do anything to disrupt that, but it would be a great moment nonetheless to see R2 once more flying with our hero in an X-Wing in a pivotal moment.
