We’re just a few weeks away from the release of the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker, and the marketing blitz has been quite intense recently.
It seems like we’ve been getting a new TV spot practically every day, and that’s pretty awesome! A new one dropped over the weekend, and it featured a few absolutely awesome shots. You can check it out below:
There were plenty of shots in this TV spot that we’ve already seen, and I’m not going to spend the time here going over all of them. So here, I’ll just focus on the new shots – if you’re looking for more on the other shots, at the bottom of the post I’ll include links to my breakdowns of other released footage.
So anyway, here’s my thoughts on the new shots in this TV spot:
It’s the Knights of Ren!! We get a glimpse of several figures wearing cloaks walking through a hallway, and it looks like they’re on a Star Destroyer. Then we get a shot of their faces, focused on Supreme Leader Kylo Ren leading the Knights of Ren down this hall. We haven’t gotten too many looks at the Knights of Ren from the film, but we now have seen them at least on Pasaana and on this Star Destroyer. I’m really excited that they’re going to be making an appearance in this film, and like I’ve said before, it’s perfectly explainable too – it’s possible that, now that Kylo Ren is the First Order’s Supreme Leader, he calls on his elite troops to aid him on specific missions.
Though the Knights of Ren appearing is really cool, this is easily the money shot of the trailer, and it’s one of my favorite shots we’ve gotten from the movie period: it’s General Leia Organa holding the Skywalker lightsaber. That’s right: this is Leia holding her father’s lightsaber, and it’s the first time we’ve ever seen it happen on-screen in a Star Wars film. That’s a really cool and special moment. This is on the jungle planet (that apparently is called Ajan Kloss), where Rey is training at the beginning of the film. And here’s my guess: that Leia is the one training Rey. It’s either Leia or Luke’s Force ghost, and we know that Leia is strong with the Force, had some training, and has used the Force in every film she’s appeared in except A New Hope. I think it’d be pretty cool to see her picking up Rey’s training where her brother left off, and that leads to her handling the lightsaber used by her father and brother.
We can see the repairs to the lightsaber pretty clearly here too, and what if Leia is the one who repairs it for Rey? That would be kinda cool, but I’m not sure if that’s the case or not. Either way, this is a beautiful shot of Leia that holds so much meaning and significance within the larger Skywalker saga.
I’ll also mention that I think the work ILM has done here looks really good. Leia handled the Skywalker lightsaber in a scene cut from The Force Awakens, and I’m guessing that’s what this is from – but her outfit, the background, and the lightsaber have all changed. I still think it looks really good, though, so credit to ILM.
It’s Chewie! Nothing more to say here; I just love seeing him.
Poe Dameron is flying the Millennium Falcon, and he yells, “Hold on!” as he flies somewhere with a green glow. Based on some of the footage in international spots, we see that Poe pilots the Falcon in this green space as he evades TIE Fighters and a giant eel-like creature in space. I’m guessing that this is from the same sequence, and I’m not really sure of the context here, other than that this is apparently from the mission Poe, Finn, Chewie, and Klaud are on.
We got a green glow from space as Poe pilots the Falcon, and then we get the red glow from space as the Resistance fleet flies by. We get an up-close look at the blockade runner and an X-Wing zoom past, and it looks like there are plenty of other ships too. This is a strange area, and my only guess is that this could be the Resistance fleet heading to face Palpatine. I’m guessing that the fleet is assembled throughout the film and then takes off together once they discover Palpatine (or his location), and given the fact that the Sith apparently like the color red, maybe this is what it looks like when they get near to Palpatine’s hideout? I have no idea; that’s just a guess.
But I do love the visuals from this movie that we’ve seen; it really looks like J.J. Abrams and the folks at ILM have put together a gorgeous-looking movie, that’s for sure.
As we glimpse the giant space battle, we hear a voiceover from Palpatine saying, “Let the final battle begin.” He sure is dramatic, isn’t he? But it’s true: this is the final fight agaisnt the phantom menace who has been the main villain of the saga from the beginning. It’ll be interesting to see whether this line is actually in the film or whether it’s just for the trailer to hype things up.
The last new glimpse in the trailer is of BB-8 lowering his head and charging ahead, leading the way as Finn, Jannah, and others on Orbaks follow closely behind as they mount their attack atop the Star Destroyer. I can’t wait to see this sequence, and I love BB-8 just courageously rolling ahead to lead the attack.
