On Thanksgiving night, Disney released a touching behind-the-scenes featurette leading up to The Rise of Skywalker, taking a look back at the history of the Skywalker saga as it has been filmed and culminating in several new behind-the-scenes shots of the upcoming film.
It’s a really well done feature, and I recommend you checking it out:
But there’s something that is particularly interesting in that featurette, and it’s by way of a single shot that is really easy to miss. It’s this one:
That’s Warwick Davis dressed in his Wicket costume, looking up at the head. In a BTS reel filled with plenty of shots from the filming of the original trilogy, that’s no big deal, and it fits right in. That’s why this shot is in many ways hidden right in the open, because it’s so easy to miss.
But here’s the thing: that’s adult Warwick Davis.
When he played Wicket in Return of the Jedi he was just a child, and the image included here is very clearly not from that. So this has to be taken from another instance of Davis playing Wicket, but he hasn’t played the character since 1985’s The Battle for Endor. In other words, here’s my point: we have never seen Davis as an adult portray Wicket, but the BTS reel clearly shows an adult Warwick Davis in the Wicket costume.
What does that mean? Well, unfortunately, we don’t have any concrete confirmation… but I seriously wonder if it’s the reveal that Wicket is in The Rise of Skywalker! It’s actually pretty plausible, too, since we know that Rey and the heroes visit the the wreckage of the second Death Star. She explores it, she confronts Kylo, and it seems the heroes also meet Jannah in this adventure. We have been told that the planet where the wreckage lies is named Kef Bir, which I presume to be another moon of Endor, but it’s easily possible that we’ll travel to the forest moon of Endor as well. Perhaps that’s where the heroes go first before being re-directed to Kef Bir? Or maybe we’re being misled a bit about the name “Kef Bir” itself?
I don’t know, but what I do know is that unless Warwick Davis is portraying Wicket again in another project, it seems like he might be reprising the role in The Rise of Skywalker! That would be amazing (and would mean we’d see the Ewoks again!), and it would fit very easily with what we know takes place in the film already. I’m hoping it happens!
It’s a very safe bet that Davis will be in the film in at least some role, however. Since appearing as Wicket in Return of the Jedi, Davis has had roles in The Phantom Menace, The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi, and Solo, and he’s a popular host at Celebration as well. None of his roles have been as big, important, or beloved as Wicket, however, and he may very well be returning to his first role in the galaxy far, far away for this final chapter!
