There’s a lot of Star Wars content in the works right now, but as we get updates on a variety of them, we have heard very little about the most established ongoing series, The Mandalorian.
It will be returning for a third season, but we know that it won’t be releasing in 2021. There will be other content from the same creatives and connected to it with The Book of Boba Fett (which is set to release this December), but information about The Mandalorian itself has been hard to come by – including even when it’ll be filming.
But Carl Weathers recently appeared on a panel at Steel City Con and among many other things, he talked about his work on The Mandalorian. At one point he mentioned that it begins filming soon:
“… And so now we’re gonna start a new season of The Mandalorian in the next month. [applause] And I get to be in front of the camera again, and I get to direct again. So I hope you all stay on the lookout for it, watch it, support it, please, because I’m not just proud of my work, I’m really proud of the show and to be a part of it. …”
That’s the clearest information we’ve gotten to-date about the schedule, and it would seem that The Mandalorian will begin filming in September. And this is also confirmation that Greef Karga will remain in the show, as well as confirmation that Carl Weathers will continue to be a director on the series. He appeared in four episodes in the show’s first season and then one episode in season two, which he also directed (“Chapter 12: The Siege”). In-universe Karga had developed a working relationship with Cara Dune, who won’t be appearing in the show moving forward after Disney fired Gina Carano for her careless social media behavior. But even though she won’t be back, he will be. We really have no idea what the storyline for season three is going to be, now that Grogu is with Luke Skywalker, but season two seemed to set up story threads that could lead to an effort to liberate Mandalore (which would be epic).
Also significant though is the fact that the show is going to begin filming within the next month. That means we’re probably looking at a late 2022 release for the show (at earliest), but we’ll have plenty of other stories – including some that are connected to this series – while we wait. And it also means that we’ll probably be hearing more about season three of The Mandalorian before long.
