A new era of Star Wars will begin next year, when Starfigter hits theaters.
It is the next major Star Wars movie and presumably will usher in a whole new set of characters and the beginning of a whole new story. But it will also the furthest into the timeline a live-action Star Wars project has gone. Starfighter will be set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, and in a recent interview with Good Morning America, director Shawn Levy shared an enticing little nugget about the state of the galaxy by that point.
“This is a moment in the galaxy where there is no sort of governing enforcer or order,” Levy said. “And so everyone is just trying to survive, everyone is just trying to do their best to get by”, which includes the film’s main character, Kade Auberon, played by Ryan Gosling.
That’s a detail that probably doesn’t have huge significance on this story, but it’s something that will be raelly interesting for Star Wars fans, as it is our first glimpse at what life is like after the war between the Resistance and the First Order. After the Sith Eternal fleet was defeated above Exegol, it seems that the galaxy exists in a power vacuum of sorts. No central government has risen to take the place of its predecessors, which makes sense. After the Republic fell, the Senators and leaders still were alive and continuing on in their positions – albeit with changed responsibilities. After the Empire fell, the leadership of the Rebellion formed the New Republic, and they had plenty of leaders ready to step in. But in The Force Awakens the entire New Republic leadership was wiped out when Starkiller Base destroyed the Hosnian System. Leia Organa died in The Rise of Skywalker, marking the last of the Republic’s leaders.
So, come to think of it, of course there’s no one ready to step right back into power after the First Order fell. I’m sure that means there are plenty of smaller factions competing for power and influence, but no centralized government. That means that this will be the Star Wars galaxy unlike anything we’ve seen before. And I think that makes for some really interesting potential for these stories, starting with Starfighter.
We’ll see it when Starfighter hits theaters on May 27, 2027.
