In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi, the film will be returning to theaters for a limited run later this spring.
The news was announced at the end of the 40th anniversary panel at Star Wars Celebration, and according to the accompanying article on the Star Wars website it will be in theaters from April 28 through May 4 in the United States, and from April 28 through May 1 in the United Kingdom. This marks the first time in 26 years that the movie has been officially released in theaters.
Return of the Jedi was originally released on May 25, 1983 and was the highest-grossing film of 1983. The special edition of the film was re-released in theaters alongside the other two chapters of the original trilogy in 1997. This year’s re-release will be the first official time since then that this movie has hit theaters, which means that there are entire generations of fans which will now be able to see the beloved film on the big screen.
But that wasn’t the only reveal, as the panel also dropped an absolutely gorgeous new poster for the film, created by Matt Ferguson. His work on the poster for the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back three years ago was also fantastic, but he’s managed to top it with this one, which is one of my favorite Star Wars posters. It captures the feel of the movie so well:
