John Williams, John Powell nominated for Grammys for their work on Star Wars films

Both John Williams and John Powell have been nominated for the 61st Grammy Awards for their work on the Star Wars films.

Announced on Friday, Williams has been nominated in the category of “Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media” with The Last Jedi soundtrack, while both Williams and Powell were nominated for the “Best Instrumental Composition” with “Mine Mission” from Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Both of those are well-deserved, as Williams’ soundtrack for The Last Jedi is one of my favorite overall works of his from the Star Wars franchise (which is saying a lot), while I was quite frankly blown away by how amazing Solo‘s soundtrack was.  Williams composed the theme for Han Solo, while Powell then did the rest of the soundtrack and absolutely nailed it.

This is the second Grammy nomination for Powell and the 66th for Williams, who has won 24 Grammys.  For his work on Star Wars, Williams has now been nominated for 15 Grammys and has won six of them.  Seven of his eight Star Wars scores have now been nominated for “Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media” (or an equivalent title), with only Attack of the Clones not nominated.  Williams has won the award for three different Star Wars soundtracks: Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Force Awakens.  As for the “Best Instrumental Composition,” Williams has now been nominated five times for Star Wars compositions, winning two of them (for the “Main Title” from Star Wars and for “The Empire Strikes Back”).

As for the other nominees, Ludwig Goransson (Black Panther), Benjamin Wallfisch and Hans Zimmer (Blade Runner 2049), Michael Giacchino (Coco), and Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water) were all nominated along with Williams (The Last Jedi) for best score soundtrack.  For best instrumental composition, joining Powell and Williams (“Mine Mission”) are Terence Blanchard (“Blut Und Boden” (Blood and Soil)), Jeremy Kittel (“Chrysalis”), Alan Silvestri (“Infinity War”), and Alexandre Desplat (“The Shape of Water”).

Congratulations to both Williams and Powell for being nominated for their terrific work on these recent Star Wars films, and hopefully they’ll be awarded wins when the Grammys are announced on February 10, 2019.
