Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian to return for an hour-long special on the making of season two!

As if last week didn’t have enough Star Wars announcements for you, we got another one today!

Lucasfilm announced today that Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian will be returning, with an hour-long special dropping on December 25 on Disney+ on the “Making of Season Two.”

For the first season of the show, this making-of documentary series spent eight episodes looking at how Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and so many others brought the first ever live-action Star Wars show to life. It was a fantastic look behind the scenes at all aspects of the show, revealing some phenomenal conversations and amazing revelations – like, for instance, the groundbreaking technology of The Volume, in which the show was filmed!

The series is returning with a one-hour special on Christmas, so while it’s not an eight episode exploration this time around, we’ll still get a look behind the scenes at the making of the second season. From StarWars.com:

“Featuring immersive on-set footage that places viewers right in the middle of the filmmaking process, and rare insights from the cast and crew, this special documentary explores the production of all 8 episodes in Season 2 — from early concept art through the groundbreaking technology introduced in the series.”

It’s a bummer that this is just one ‘episode’ rather than a series, but that’s only because of how great the look at season one was! And, if we’re honest, it does make sense that there wouldn’t be as much to explore with season two, since things like The Volume, honoring the Star Wars legacy, bringing a live-action series to life, composing the music, etc. were all already covered. But at the same time, season two features some massively significant storylines, most notable being the familiar characters brought in: Cobb Vanth, Bo-Katan Kryze, Ahsoka Tano, and Boba Fett! I expect a lot of the special to focus on this, and rightly so: I really want to hear more about bringing these characters to the show, and I particularly want to hear (and see) from Dave Filoni about bringing Ahsoka to live-action.

So yeah, I’m really pumped about this! It’s only a one-hour special, but if it’s as good as the series was for season one, we’re in for a real treat.
