Patty Jenkins to direct the next Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron!

Major news was announced by Lucasfilm President Kathy Kennedy today, as it was revealed that the next Star Wars feature film, releasing Christmas 2023, will be directed by Patty Jenkins and will be Rogue Squadron!

The show is described thusly: “The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.”

Jenkins is perhaps most well-known for directing Wonder Woman and the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984, and it’s really exciting to see her directing a Star Wars film (you can tell her excitement and passion for it in the video she tweeted out). She’s a perfect choice for this, and will be the first woman to direct a Star Wars feature film.

And the subject of the film is even more thrilling: Rogue Squadron!!!! The squadron has a rich history in Star Wars, being the focus of a number of video games, and canon material has also re-introduced us to the squadron, as established in the comics. It’s unknown how much this will tie into all of that, but it’s super awesome to be getting a film about the squadron, and about pilots in particular.

Taika Waititi is currently writing his Star Wars film as well, so look for that in the coming years, but Rogue Squadron will be the next Star Wars movie to be released. I’m thrilled about both the subject and the director!
