In exactly two weeks, the highly-anticipated. second season of The Mandalorian will premiere on Disney+, but filming is about to begin on season three already as well!
Showrunner Jon Favreau told Variety that season three of the show will begin filming “before the end of the year.” They’re waiting on star Pedro Pascal to finish shooting in Europe on the film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and when he finishes that, it sounds like filming on The Mandalorian will get underway.
There’s obviously been a lot of uncertainty surrounding things with the COVID-19 pandemic, but Favreau said that, “We’re operating under the assumption that we’ll be able to go forward.” Part of the reason for that is because of the way that The Mandalorian is filmed, with the revolutionary technology in The Volume. “We’re in very small situations and oftentimes we have a lot of characters in masks,” Favreau said. “And we also have a lot of digital work that augments things. So we’re a show that’s probably well-equipped to be flexible based on the protocols that are emerging surrounding work restarting.”
It always speaks volumes about a show when they’re preparing to begin filming the next season before this season even premieres, but it’s also a no-brainer for The Mandalorian. It’s been a massive hit (in large part thanks to the Child), and so of course Disney and Lucasfilm are going to want to keep it going as long as there are stories to tell.
This is the way!
