Obi-Wan Kenobi series will begin filming in March 2021, Ewan McGregor reveals

In a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Ewan McGregor revealed that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series will begin filming in March 2021!

We had known that the show would begin filming, but as far as I’ve seen, this looks like the first officially confirmed date. While appearing on the show, McGregor also talked about portraying a character much closer in age to Alec Guinness’s iconic performance, and how for the prequels he actually had gone back and watched some of Guinness’s younger work to get a better grasp of how he would act. Check it out:

But again, I think the biggest takeaway here is that the show will begin filming in March 2021. A Kenobi project has been rumored for many years and seems like a no-brainer, considering the popularity of the character and of McGregor’s portrayal of him. Eventually it was officially announced, and we’ll be getting a limited series (i.e. one season) exploring the iconic character eight years after Revenge of the Sith, so during the era where he is on exile on Tatooine, watching over a young Luke Skywalker. The series is being helmed by Deborah Chow, who directed two episodes of The Mandalorian in season one (“Chapter 3: The Sin” and “Chapter 7: The Reckoning”). It sounds likely that the show will drop in 2022, though no formal date has been announced yet.

The show will also utilize the revolutionary technology used to film The Mandalorian, called The Volume. That excites McGregor, as does the whole prospect of returning to play Obi-Wan Kenobi – 16 years after Revenge of the Sith was released.

“I’m more excited about doing this one than I was doing the second and third one that we did before,” he said in an interview with Empire last month. “I’m just excited about working with Deborah Chow, and the storylines are going to be really good I think. I’m just excited to play him again. It’s been long enough since I played him before.”

I think it’s safe to say that Star Wars fans are just excited to see Ewan McGregor reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi again, too. And though we don’t know exactly when we will get to see that, he’ll return to the role in March 2021 to film.
