On Friday, it was reported by The Hollywood Reporter that Temuera Morrison will be playing Boba Fett in the second season of The Mandalorian!
That’s obviously a very exciting report, but all things considered, people wondered whether Morrison could actually be playing a different character: Rex.
Now, let’s make this clear: THR’s report specifically stated that their sources told them Morrison is playing Boba Fett, and that fits with the tease at the end of episode five last season too. But it’s possible Morrison is playing more than just Fett…
That’s according to Cinelinx’s Jordan Maison, who tweeted this:
It does seem like that report has some traction, and that’s very interesting. But also makes sense. After all, if you’re going to bring Morrison in for the role of the iconic bounty hunter, and you already have him on set, why not add another role?
Remember that Boba Fett is an unaltered clone of his father, Jango Fett, and that the clone troopers were all altered clones of Jango. That means that Morrison could very easily play both Boba Fett and a clone trooper, since they’re both clones of Jango Fett. And withreports of Ahsoka Tano’s appearance in the show, making her live-action debut, it makes a ton of sense that Captain Rex would make his live-action debut as well, right?
That seems all the more likely with Morrison’s casting, especially with what Maison tweeted. It would be super cool to see Rex in live-action alongside Ahsoka, even for what would likely be a small role (like I’m assuming Ahsoka will have too). I really hope that happens. And it sounds like it might.
It’s something Morrison has previously said he would love to do too. Here’s what he had to say:
“They’re all in my Jango Fett line – I have clones lining up. Then, of course, there’s Captain Rex, who’s an iconic character. I’ve also voiced various games. What’ll make me really happy is if I get the phone call asking me to play another character – an older Captain Rex or something. I want to pop in on one of these new ones, that would be great. Suggest it to them for me! Let’s get on to it!”
Hopefully, he already got that phone call, and we’ll be seeing him actually play Rex this fall in The Mandalorian!
