According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm has approached Taika Waititi about developing a Star Wars movie!
No further details are known, such as whether this will actually happen, when it would be, or what it would be about. But it sounds like there are definitely conversations happening between the two sides, and I think it would be cool for it to happen.
Waititi is probably best known as the director of Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit. Thor: Ragnarok was a well-received Marvel film that helped transform the character of Thor. Jojo Rabbit has been nominated for six Academy Awards this year including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, and was named by the American Film Institute as one of the top ten films of 2019.
But for Star Wars fans, perhaps the most notable part of Waititi’s resume is that he directed the eighth and final episode of season one of The Mandalorian, and he also provided the voice for IG-11. THR’s report notes that The Mandalorian may prove to be a “training and testing ground” for future Star Wars directors. Obviously Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau figure to be significant parts of future Star Wars storytelling, Deborah Chow is directing the Kenobi series for Disney+, and now Waititi has reportedly been asked to develop a Star Wars film too.
