The report from Variety states that many actors were being considered for the rule but that, “insiders tell Variety that [Pascal] has been offered the role and negotiations are underway.” Entertainment Weekly confirmed those reports while affirming that Pascal will be the lead in the show and that production has already been underway, just without a lead actor.
As the lead in the show, Pascal will take up the mantle and mask of the Mandalorian, described as “a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”
Pascal is best-known for his work on the Netflix series Narcos (as Javier Pena) and on Game of Thrones (as Oberyn Martell). He joins a growing list of Game of Thrones stars to join the Star Wars universe, joining Emilia Clarke, Gwendoline Christie, Max Von Sydow, Jessica Henwick, and creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, among others.
The Mandalorian is already underway with production before its anticipated arrival on Disney Plus next year, and it is being helmed by Jon Favreau, with episodes being led by a fantastic group of directors including Dave Filoni, Taika Waititi, Bryce Dallas Howard, and others. Favreau, Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson are executive producing the show. Filoni, a legend when it comes to Star Wars storytelling, is directing the pilot of the show. Now that they seem to have found their lead actor, I’m sure that production will continue to pick up.
