Exciting news dropped yesterday, as Jon Favreau posted on his Instagram page the apparent title and plot synopsis of his live-action Star Wars TV show!
Titled “The Mandalorian,” Favreau writes that,
“After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the trevails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic….”
This isn’t surprising for those who have followed the reports, but it is confirmation – which is important! Making Star Wars – who has been all over this live-action TV show recently – reported back in August that the show would be about Mandalore after the fall of the Empire. It appears that it’s true. More recently, MSW reported that Pedro Pascal was being eyed for the lead, which now would appear to be that “lone gunfighter” that Favreau describes. I’d be excited to see that!
Additionally, MSW reported recently that Dave Filoni himself will direct two of the first season’s eight episodes, including the pilot. That’s great news because Filoni is the best Star Wars storyteller out there currently (and that’s not a knock on the others but rather high praise for Filoni), and he has plenty of experience with Mandalorians. He included them in both The Clone Wars and in Rebels, and I’m sure he has plenty of ideas about Mandalore (and one Mandalorian in particular…) after the fall of the Empire.
It will be really interesting to see what this show turns out to be. Though we did get a plot tease, which is exciting, it doesn’t tell us a whole lot. It tells us the time period (which we already knew), tells us the subject (a lone Mandalorian gunfighter), builds hype amongst fans (by name-dropping Jango and Boba Fett), and tells us an important setting (this takes place in the far reaches of the galaxy away from the New Republic’s authority). I really do hope that this show touches at least partly on the development of the New Republic, but it doesn’t sound to be a particular focus.
I’m interested in this lone gunfighter, too. Who is it? They’re supposedly a Mandalorian, and a gunfighter. But does that mean that this person is away from Mandalore when we meet them, and that through the course of the show we see them return to their home world? There’s just so much we don’t know.
But that’s ok, because we’re still a ways away. So it’s nice that Favreau released the name and some basic details about the show, and I’m really, really excited to see it in action!
