We’ve got some huge and very exciting Star Wars news today, as Lucasfilm announced that Rian Johnson has been tapped to helm a brand new trilogy.
This trilogy will be separate from the Skywalker saga, becoming the first of the trilogy films to do so. Lucasfilm’s announcement says, “In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.”
Johnson will write and direct the first film of the trilogy, with Ram Bergman set to produce it, but it sounds like he will be crafting the trilogy of films up front. No release dates have been announced for these movies yet, but with Episode IX premiering in 2019 it wouldn’t be a surprise if this new trilogy kicks off a year or two after that.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
It speaks very highly of what Lucasfilm thinks of Johnson’s work on The Last Jedi that they’ve already tapped him to lead them into this brand new trilogy of films and taking the company in a direction they’ve never gone before. Johnson has a tremendous reputation as a writer and director, and all indications are that he’s done a masterful job on TLJ.
As for the content of the trilogy, there has been nothing announced yet, but the logical presumption would be that it’s set in the Old Republic. The new era of Star Wars storytelling has for the most part left the Old Republic completely blank, which most expect is so that they can go into it with a blank slate to create new stories – which is exactly the way Lucasfilm announced this news. So I’d guess that it’s an Old Republic trilogy with new characters, and it that’s the case then I’d be super pumped.
But either way, it’s really exciting that Rian Johnson is returning to the Star Wars universe and will be the creative lead on this brand new trilogy, taking us to places of the galaxy far, far away that we’ve never seen before. I’m a big Rian Johnson fan and I’ve been hoping he’d return to do another Star Wars movie, and I’m also excited for the pathways that this opens up. I think it’s awesome, and I’m excited to see where he takes this new trilogy!
