International trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi reveals a few new shots

Today the international trailer and poster for The Last Jedi dropped, and while there’s not much new or of significance, there certainly are a few things that are worth pointing out.

First off, if you haven’t seen the international trailer you can find it here, but just be warned that it’s pretty much the same as the trailer we got last month, with a few new shots like I said.  The poster, on the other hand, while largely resembling the previous poster, has a few major changes that we’ll look at in just a moment.

Even still, because The Last Jedi can’t get here soon enough, let’s take a look at those new shots.  The poster, on the other hand, while largely resembling the previous poster, has a few major changes that we’ll look at in just a moment.

One of the new shots is of Rey in a cave saying, “I need help.”  She’s clearly on Ahch-To, meaning that she’s almost certainly talking to Luke Skywalker.  This actually helps us place a scene from the previous trailer, as we actually heard this line in a voice-over: “Something inside me has always been there, but now it’s awake, and I need help.”  In the scene shown in the international trailer, it appears to be the setting for at least the last part of that comment.  So she’s most likely saying this to Luke, and it appears to be in the same cave (or tree?) that Luke says, “It’s time for the Jedi to end” in.

Pretty much the only new shot of Kylo Ren that we get is this of him holding his helmet.  We’ve seen this from another angle, but this one shows the helmet more directly – and it looks to be from the same scene in which he smashes it into the wall.

Perhaps the biggest change as it pertains to Kylo, however, is that a shot of him was spliced into Luke’s comment when he says “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before.”  It could just be misdirection by Lucasfilm, but then why not do it in the original trailer?  I really don’t think it’s that much of a secret, and this trailer hints at it even more strongly than the first one: the person Luke’s referring to is Ben Solo.

The trailer also showed us a few new shots of BB-8, including one of him peeking around a corner, and then one of him in an X-Wing (almost certainly Poe’s) and his head appearing to rise off his body as they’re pursued by TIE Fighters.  And speaking of droids…

C-3PO!  This is the clearest shot we’ve seen of him yet from The Last Jedi, but the famous protocol droid is looking as shiny as usual – and rocking his golden arm.  He appears to be in a control room of some sorts for the Resistance, perhaps on board a ship (the Raddus?).  We knew he was going to be in the movie, but it’s always nice to see a new shot like this of one of the classic characters.

So, like I said, there wasn’t much new revealed in the trailer.  There were a few new shots, a few shots from the first trailer spliced in, and a few things taken out or changed, but overall it very much resembled the trailer we got last month.

The poster did too, with a few major changes.  Making Star Wars first noticed the international poster, and it resembles the previous poster… but check out Luke Skywalker!

Rey has replaced Luke atop the poster (meaning that perhaps Luke’s placement there on the original poster actually wasn’t a sign that he might be evil… hmm, imagine that?), and Luke has taken Rey’s spot… including holding the Skywalker lightsaber.

You can tell from the hilt that it’s definitely the classic lightsaber, and the gloved hand holding it shows that it’s Luke’s.  And it’s not just Luke and Rey switching positiosn, as Rey has the red robe on that we’ve seen in the character posters, whereas Luke’s hand is gripping the lightsaber.  It’s the second time in just a few days we’ve seen Luke holding this lightsaber, as just a few days ago some glasses for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas were revealed that shows Luke wielding the saber.  Of course, it always made sense for Luke to ignite the classic saber at some point, as Rey literally hands it to him and then trains with it in front of him.  But I’m surprised we’ve now seen two images of him with the saber recently.  Lucasfilm is clearly trying to leave the mystery regarding whether Luke uses his green saber, but it’s really cool to see Luke at least holding a lightsaber once again.

Also: there’s a porg on Chewie’s shoulder!!
