The Mandalorian and Grogu: Who are the Hutt Twins?

The Mandalorian and Grogu has a lot of Hutts. Among them are the film’s antagonists, a pair of Hutts who cross Din Djarin. These Hutt twins are relatively new in Star Wars storytelling, but this actually isn’t their first appearance.

They were introduced in The Book of Boba Fett, where they came to Tatooine to assert claim over the late Jabba the Hutt’s territory. Jabba was the most prominent member and leader of the Hutt Clan, and his criminal syndicate had amassed nearly unrivaled power in the galaxy. After his death at the hands of Leia Organa during the rescue of Han Solo in Return of the Jedi, Jabba’s majordomo, Bib Fortuna, claimed the throne. But his reign was short-lived, as Boba Fett soon escaped the sarlacc pit, reclaimed his armor, and killed Fortuna. Fett took the throne and claimed Jabba’s Palace as his own, attempting to establish his own enterprise – one known for respect.

This endeavor was met with resistance, however, as the Hutt Twins arrived on Tatooine. These twins were Jabba’s cousin, and therefore they thought that what Jabba had belongs to them. They were carried through the streets on a litter, paraded by their own posse, to the entrance of the Palace. They sent the wookiee bounty hunter Black Krrsantan to kill Fett, but this was unsuccessful. Seeing that their plan had failed, and that Jabba’s territory actually had been already claimed by the Pyke Syndicate, the Hutt Twins decided to leave Tatooine rather than risk war with the Pykes. Upon leaving, they gave Fett a peace offering as a gift: a new rancor to keep in the Palace.

As seen in The Mandalorian and Grogu, though, the Hutt twins obviously still have some sway, influence, and ambition. As the Empire fell and the New Republic took its place, there was both a power vacuum and an opportunity for the syndicates to try to grab it – something these twins see as an opening.
