The Mandalorian season 3 premiere is right around the corner, but it won’t be the end of the road for the highly-acclaimed series. In fact, season 4 has already been writen.
Showrunner Jon Favreau revealed that in a recent interview with the French TV station BFMTV, sharing about how the next season of the show is already written and how the desire is to keep this story feeling connected.
“Season 4? Yeah, I’ve written it already,” Favreau said. “We have to know where we are going to tell a fully formed story. So, we had mapped it out, Dave [Filoni] and I. And then slowly you just write each episode. So I was writing it during post-production, because all of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”
Given the massive success of the series, as well as the overarching story that Favreau and Filoni are telling, it’s not surprising to learn that he’s already got season four of the show mapped out. He shared at Celebration last year that he was working on it, and it’s now finished. With other ‘spin-off’ shows like The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew all connecting within the same timeline, it’s all the more important to keep some of the overall story arcs mapped out far in advance.
It’s actually nothing new, either. Before season 2 of The Mandalorian premiered Favreau was already well underway writing season 3 and getting the ball rolling, so he’s just doing what he’s always done. It’s reminder of how far ahead of the release date these projects actually begin, but also indicative of the stellar success of the series that there’s zero question it’ll keep going.
First up, though, is season 3, which premieres next week, on March 1. The eight-episode sesaon will pick up on the events of the prior seasons of the show, and The Book of Boba Fett, and see the further exploits of Din Djarin and Grogu – as they head to Mandalore for what promises to be a thrilling ride.
