In the wake of the completion of the Star Wars sequel trilogy with the release of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, the main actors of the trilogy all expressed a desire to move beyond the franchise.
Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac all seemed burnt out from Star Wars and ready to do other things, but in the time since then all three seem to have softened a bit on that stance. In a recent interview with Variety, Oscar Isaac discussed his willingness to return to the role of Poe Dameron in the right circumstances:
“I don’t know. I’m open to anything. You never know. I have no real feeling one way or another. I’m open to any good story. Time is the one thing that becomes challenging…as you get older and kids and all that. Where do [movies] fit in? If there was a great story and a great director and Kathy [Kennedy] came to me and was like, ‘I have this great idea,’ then I’m so open to it.”
That’s a similar sentiment that has been shared by his fellow stars.
When asked earlier this year about a potential return to the franchise, Daisy Ridley responded, “I’ll always be Rey.” And last year John Boyega told Entertainment Weekly that he’d be up for a return too, depending on who was involved: “Whichever way, I am open to the conversation as long as it is Kathleen [Kennedy], J.J. [Abrams], and maybe someone else and the team, it’s a no-brainer.”
There is an openness to returning, at least in their public comments, that wasn’t there just a few years ago. It’s also interesting to note that a big part of their willingness to return is because of the people involved, namely Kathy Kennedy, as they’d return if approached by her with a good story.
I’d be surprised if there’s a return for these three anytime soon, but I’m hopeful that it will happen eventually and that we’ll be able to continue the story of these three heroes in various ways!
