There are a lot of Star Wars projects currently in the works, and The Acolyte seems to be one currently flying under the radar a bit. Any news – and even any reports – about the series is sparse, but back in December it was reported by Variety that Amandla Stenberg was being eyed for the lead in the series.
Today, Stenberg took to social media to officially confirm that she is, indeed, in The Acolyte.
This is the first official news about the series, besides the fact that it’s being helmed by Leslye Headland that is described by Lucasfilm as “a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.” We don’t know when it will release, but at least we now have official confirmation about one of the cast members.
Though the series is flying under the radar a bit right now, I think it has a lot of potential, being the rare Star Wars project to focus on the dark side of the galaxy. I’m intrigued by the way it might tie into the High Republic while also setting up the return of the Sith in the prequel trilogy, and I think that this could have the potential to expand a lot of horizons and fill in plenty of details. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see what direction they wind up taking – since we know next to nothing about it currently – but the brief description does seem to lend itself toward some of those options.
