Any sort of details on The Acolyte have been very hard to come by, but a recent report suggests that the series is closing in on having its lead.
According to Variety (and a number of other outlets), Amandla Stenberg is being eyed as the star of the series and is in talks with Lucasfilm on it.
The series is being helmed by Leslye Headland, and it is described as “a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.” That’s all we have to go on, and of course the title itself suggests that this series will follow some followers of the dark side, perhaps giving us a unique focus for a Star Wars series. If that’s the case, then perhaps the leading star for the series would actually be an Acolyte of the dark side, but that’s all just speculation right now.
Like I said, we don’t know much. But this seems to be a significant piece of the equation for the show, which is reportedly set to go into production next year. The fact that it’s set in the final years of the High Republic era is also very interesting, as that’s a major area of focus in Star Wars storytelling right now, but given the time frame this might not be as inter-connected to those stories. We’ll have to wait and see.
