Rick Famuyiwa is returning to the galaxy far, far away – and in an expanded role! It was announced today at Star Wars Celebration that not only is he returning to The Mandalorian as a director on season three, but he also is an executive producer on the series as well!
Famuyiwa joins showrunners Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni as executive producers, alongside Lucasfilm President Kathy Kennedy and Colin Wilson.
This represents an increased involvement and investment in the show, and it’s well-deserved. Famuyiwa directed two episodes of the first season of the show (“Chapter 2: The Child” and “Chapter 6: The Prisoner”), as well as an episode of season two (“Chapter 15: The Believer”). He’s done a great job with those episodes, and he’s also filling the same role on season three as one of the directors. Now, he’s executive producing it too.
This news also just continues the promotions for the group of directors on the first season of this groundbreaking show, as the five directors have all become staple storytellers in this new era of Star Wars. Dave Filoni directed two episodes and is a massive part of, well, pretty much everything Lucasfilm does. Deborah Chow also directed two episodes and helped the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, serving as showrunner, director, and executive producer. Taika Waititi directed an episode, and he’s developing a movie that will be the next Star Wars film to hit theaters. Bryce Dallas Howard deserves a project of her own, but she has directed on every seasons of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett (one of just two people to direct on each of those three seasons, alongside Dave Filoni) and is returning for season three. And then there’s Rick Famuyiwa, who is already very familiar to The Mandalorian and is now more involved than ever.
The Mandalorian season three will be premiering on Disney+ in February 2023.
