Is there another Star Wars animated series in development?

There’s an interesting rumor going around today about a new Star Wars project that has yet to be announced. This may or may not wind up being true, but it seems significant enough to mention here at least.

It all stems from a post picked up on by the Star Wars Leaks subreddit, where several photos were posted appearing to show Lucasfilm’s holiday gift for some employees. The gift itself is a Lucasfilm record player, but what got people talking was the packaging. It came in a pretty awesome-looking box bearing the Lucasfilm logo on the front, but then on the sides of the box are several logos for upcoming projects. On one side are logos for Indiana Jones 5, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. On the other side are logos for Willow, The Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi, and Visions.

Did you catch it? There’s a logo for something called Tales of the Jedi, which we don’t know about. And that’s quite curious.

First, we’ve got to note that it’s possible this isn’t even legit. But if it’s fake, then someone did a pretty impressive job, because this all looks real. But we of course can’t believe everything we read on the internet, which is why this is squarely in the “rumor” category until we hear more. It’s especially strange that we wouldn’t have heard anything about this only for it to leak in this way (because let’s be real, they had to have known it’d get out if they started putting it on packaging like this). All of that leads me to question some of it.

But second, assuming it’s real, we have to ask what the project might actually be. And there are two reasons why I’m speculating that it would be an animated series. The first is that it’s sandwiched in-between the logos for The Bad Batch and Visions, which are the two other animated series we know about. The second is that I think it’d be a lot harder to keep the news of a live-action series under wraps like this as compared to an animated series.

So let’s then move on to the third point, which is this: what might this even be about? There was a legends comic series called Tales of the Jedi that ran from 1993 to 1998, written by Tom Veitch and Kevin Anderson, which told stories set in the Old Republic era. Might that mean that this canon series would be about the Jedi set in the High Republic era? Lucasfilm was insistent at the launch of the era that they only had plans for books and comics, but recently a video game was announced too. And with how successful the whole thing has been, I’d be shocked if a series doesn’t come at some point. It would make a lot of sense, and it’d be really cool.

Fourth, and finally, since this logo looks so similar to the previous Tales of the Jedi logo, it’s also possible that this is more of a placeholder for a current project in development rather than the actual thing. It’s still strange to put on something like this regardless, but it would at least help explain why we have heard nothing about it yet. I’m not convinced myself about this fourth point, but figured I should at least note the possibility.

In short, we don’t know much. In fact, the reason I’m a bit cautious in saying all of this is that we actually don’t know anything! And yet if this packaging is to be believed, it’s one of the projects Lucasfilm is currently working on. It’s an odd way for them to announce something like this, so we’ll have to see. But I would really love it if it’s true! I want as much Star Wars animation as possible!
