The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is in production and is highly anticipated.
While we don’t have an official release date for the series yet and don’t know much about it, we do know a few key details. For example, Darth Vader is in it, and it sounds like he’ll have a rematch with Kenobi. And recently, we may have gotten another key detail confirmed. It has long been rumored that the series will feature Inquisitors, and in a recent interview with Screen Rant, actor Sung Kang mentioned that his character has a lightsaber.
Kang spoke about how excited he is to be in the Star Wars universe and about how as a kid he would dress up in Star Wars costumes and played with a cardboard lightsaber – and now it’s actually happening! Here was part of his answer:
“… and to be able to be on set and to see Darth Vader, and see the Star Wars universe in front of me, I mean, just as a fan, to be able to be part of that history is pretty amazing. I kept pinching myself to go, ‘how did I end up here? Right? And my character has a lightsaber! To go, ‘it’s not a toy, it’s actually the real thing!’ Right? So pretty cool.”
So that’s direct confirmation from him that his character has a lightsaber. It’s hard to misinterpret that statement. And while it doesn’t technically tell us who this lightsaber wielding character is, knowing the era does help us narrow down the possibilities and made an educated guess. There aren’t many Jedi around, and especially since Kang mentioned being on set seeing Darth Vader, the most obvious option – by far – is that he’s playing an Inquisitor.
He might not be the only one, either. When Moses Ingram was announced as part of the cast, her Instagram caption mentioned her playing with lightsabers. That’s much less clear than Kang’s statement, but still suggests that she could be playing an Inquisitor as well.
The Inquisitors have appeared in a variety of Star Wars stories in recent years, first appearing in Rebels but since featuring heavily in Fallen Order and one of the Darth Vader comics. They were a group of Force sensitive, lightsaber wielding agents who worked at the bidding of Darth Vader to hunt down the Jedi in the era of the Empire. Therefore it makes a lot of sense to think they’d show up in a series like this, which is all about one of the most prominent Jedi in exile – and which we know involves Vader, too.
