I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, “isn’t this a Star Wars site?” Yes, it is! And don’t worry; that’s not changing! So even though there are a few Indiana Jones articles up this week (and you’ll see two more coming soon in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark), this site is still almost exclusively about Star Wars.
But we’ve also looked at other Lucasfilm projects in the past, since they obviously share many similarities and overlap with the Star Wars universe and production, and the most notable such project is Indiana Jones. As we noted, the fifth installment in the franchise has begun filming, and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has called this the final one. Whether or not that actually turns out to be the case, it’s nonetheless a very plausible reality, and it’s almost certainly the last one for star Harrison Ford.
Which is why seeing him don the Indiana Jones costume again makes me happy. Yesterday, IJ Adventure Outpost on Twitter posted a photo of Ford in costume, ready to begin filming on Indiana Jones 5:
Jones is obviously recognizable, and he’s surrounded by the film’s producers: Frank Marshall (left) and Kathy Kennedy (right). Marshall heads The Kennedy/Marshall Company, while Kennedy is of course the President of Lucasfilm. Kennedy and Marshall are longtime producing partners and have worked together on numerous critically acclaimed films, along with all four previous Indiana Jones movies – and that’s in addition to being married to each other since 1987. And Harrison Ford loves them. “There’s a lot in this business that doesn’t make sense. Kathy and Frank are one of the things that do,” Ford said in 2018. “They work hard, they’re good people with good ideas, they have a real understanding of how the movie business works and they know how to get shit done.”
So Indiana Jones 5 finally underway, and Kennedy and Marshall are once again producing a film together (which I believe is just their second film producing together since Kennedy became President of Lucasfilm in 2012, along with The BFG). That’s awesome!
But the coolest part of this picture is, obviously, seeing Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones costume once again. It’s the first time we’ve seen it since Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008, and it’s probably the final time we’ll see it too. So to see Ford, on-set, donning the iconic fedora once again is just really, really cool. It doesn’t look like the costume has really changed much – but then again, what’s there to change?
Indiana Jones 5 is slated to hit theaters next summer, on July 29, 2022. The film is being directed by James Mangold, with music by John Williams, and stars Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Madds Mikkelson, as well as reportedly Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, and Shaunette Renée Wilson.
