Star Wars games have received a bit more attention so far in 2021, thanks to the rebranded Lucasfilm Games, and that has included several new announcements – including one just recently.
Star Wars: Hunters is a new game that will be coming sometime this year to Nintendo Switch that will also be available on mobile devices, in both the App Store and Google Play. It will be available to download for free. The game is described by StarWars.com as “a competitive arena combat game” where players will “engage in thrilling, team-based, multiplayer battles featuring a diverse array of distinctive new Star Wars characters.”
A teaser trailer for the game was released:
From the look and sound of it, this could perhaps be something like a Star Wars equivalent of Fortnite, but that’s just a guess on my part. It’s great that it’ll be free-to-play (which presumably means that there will be cosmetics and things like that which you can purchase), and that it will be available on mobile devices as well.
But what is particularly intriguing to me about this is that it’s set after the fall of the Empire. There is no word on whether this game is intended to be canon or not, and I wouldn’t have thought so except for that note; it wouldn’t really matter when the game is set if it’s not going to follow canon, would it? And so that’s why it’s interesting to me that in this teaser is a figure wielding a red lightsaber (and another one wielding a blue lightsaber). Simply put, this doesn’t really fit… unless they are revealing something pretty huge here. But more likely, this either isn’t canon, or this is simply a bounty hunter or something who came into possession of a lightsaber.
Anyway, I recognize that I’m reading far too much into this! Of course a Star Wars game like this is going to feature lightsabers! And it really doesn’t seem like the kind of game to expand our canon knowledge a ton, so this is probably nothing more than just a way to allow players to experience different classes of Star Wars characters to utilize. Whatever the case, I can’t wait to check this game out.
