Dave Filoni is currently in the process of writing the Ahsoka series

Even with no theatrical releases until 2023, is a ton of Star Wars content coming over the next few years.

The Mandalorian just wrapped up an incredible second season and will begin production on season three soon – right after production wraps up on The Book of Boba Fett, a new spinoff series coming December 2021.

The Boba Fett series will be a spinoff from The Mandalorian, which brought back the character seemingly from the dead, and will involve Mandalorian showrunners Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni as executive producers. But that’s not all they’re working on, as two more Mandalorian spinoffs are also in the works: Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka. Both of these shows, as well as the Boba Fett series, will be set within the same time period as The Mandalorian.

Here’s what Jon Favreau had to say about these upcoming projects in a recent interview on Good Morning America:

Yes, well there’s a lot of Star Wars content coming out, as I think they announced, ten projects, I think this would be eleven with the new Book of Boba Fett, but the ones that I’m involved with are, I’m working with my partner Dave Filoni, who is this fantastic producing partner, writer, who I met when I did a voice in The Clone Wars, we met up at the Skywalker Ranch, and we’ve been working together on this show. He’s doing Ahsoka, which he’s writing right now, and then we also have the Rangers of the New Republic, and all of them take place in the similar timeline here, that is right after Return of the Jedi, which was a film, of course, we all grew up with. I was actually an usher in the movie theater back in Queens, the RKO Keith’s, when Return of the Jedi was playing, so I saw that movie dozens and dozens of times at work, and now it’s so fun to be continuing the story after that with those characters, with some of those characters.”

So the big takeaway from those comments shouldn’t be a surprise, but here we go: it seems that Dave Filoni is very directly involved in running Ahsoka, and he is currently writing the series. Again, this shouldn’t surprise anyone, given Filoni’s connection to the character. Pretty much everything Ahsoka has been in has been overseen by Dave Filoni, so of course he’d be the one running with things here.

I think we’re also starting to get a bit of a clearer picture on how these projects are working out, with the announcement that Robert Rodriguez is joining Favreau and Filoni as executive producer on The Book of Boba Fett. Favreau and Filoni now executive producing four different live-action series at one time, while Filoni is also executive producing the animated The Bad Batch (and maybe other projects we don’t even know about yet). That’s a lot. So I’m guessing that their level of involvement may vary a bit with these shows, and that’s why it’s significant that Favreau here mentioned that Filoni is doing Ahsoka. In many ways, this sounds like his chance to truly run a live-action project; his first foray into live-action was with Favreau on The Mandalorian, but it sounds like he’s going to be the showrunner on this series. That’s the obvious choice, and I’m really excited for that and happy for him!

There’s no word yet on when these other shows will start filming, but they won’t be coming in 2021. Even still, however, it’s cool to know that Filoni is currently writing Ahsoka!
