The Book of Boba Fett will be the next chapter to release, but will be followed soon after by The Mandalorian season three

In a post-credits scene during the season two finale of The Mandalorian, a brand new spinoff show was announced: The Book of Boba Fett, coming December 2021!

This is very exciting, and as expected, we got more information today about this series, including a logo. According to the official Star Wars release, this series “will be set within the timeline of The Mandalorian,” meaning that it will now be the third spinoff series from the show, joining Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka. Also as expected, Temuera Morrison will return to star as Boba Fett, while Ming-Na Wen will return as Fennec Shand. The series will be executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Robert Rodriguez.

The involvement of Rodriguez is news and noteworthy, as he directed Chapter 14 of The Mandalorian – where Boba Fett truly returned in more than just a brief cameo role. Given that it sounds like Filoni will be especially involved in Ahsoka, and that Favreau may be similarly involved in Rangers, it’s certainly possible that Rodriguez will be working directly on this show, which is pretty cool.

But maybe the biggest question that fans have been asking is about the relationship of this series with The Mandalorian. Well, Jon Favreau cleared that up during an appearance on Good Morning America this morning. He explained that they held this series back from the Disney Investor’s Day announcements so that they could preserve the surprise of the post-credits scene, and then said this:

“So this is actually separate from The Mandalorian season three, but what we didn’t say in that announcement is that the next show coming up, Kathy said the “next chapter,” and that’s going to be The Book of Boba Fett. And then we go into production on season three of The Mandalorian, back with the main character that we all have known and loved. So that’s going to be pretty soon following that, so we’re working on that pre-production now while we’re in production on Boba Fett.”

In case you missed it, here’s the important things we learned from Favreau:

  • This is different from The Mandalorian season 3. That was pretty obvious, but since people were wondering, it’s nice to have it officially stated.
  • This is the next chapter that is coming. In the wake of the announcement I went back and listened to what Kennedy said, and Favreau pointed it out as well: she spoke of the “next chapter,” not explicitly of The Mandalorian season 3. So that next chapter is confirmed by Favreau to be The Book of Boba Fett, coming Christmas 2021.
  • The Mandalorian season 3 will be “pretty soon” after Boba Fett. So it sounds like we won’t have to wait long in-between Boba Fett and The Mandalorian, but it does mean that we probably won’t be getting the next season of The Mandalorian in 2021. It’ll probably be early 2022, from the sound of it.
  • Boba Fett is currently in production, with production on The Mandalorian to follow. So they’re working on Boba Fett right now, and then they’ll jump into The Mandalorian. That means they’ll probably begin production on that early next year. We don’t know when to expect Rangers or Ahsoka, but it’s nice to have a timeline of sorts with these shows at least.

So there you have it. It’s amazing to think about all of the spinoff shows that are coming from The Mandalorian, and I can’t wait to see them all!
