New excerpt and Dramatis Personae released for Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising!

On September 1, book one of a brand new Thrawn trilogy will be released!

Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, written by Timothy Zahn, is a prequel to the previous Thrawn trilogy and explores Mitth’raw’nuruodo before he joined the Empire, when he was a Captain in the Chiss Ascendancy. We previously got an excerpt from the prologue of the book, which features an attack on the Chiss Ascendancy homeworld of Csilla. There’s a lot of mystery surrounding what brought on the unexpected attack, and Supreme General Ba’kif turns to Senior Captain Mitth’raw’nuruodo to get to the bottom of it.

This more recent excerpt, released via IGN, sees Thrawn investigating in the wake of this attack. He is in command of the Springhawk, and the ship arrives in a system to find a battle raging between Admiral Ar’lani of the Chiss Ascendancy and at least fifty Paataatus fighters. To the surprise of Thrawn’s first officer Samakro, Thrawn orders his ship further into the battle. It soon becomes clear that he is attempting to draw the enemy attention away from the Chiss fighters, allowing them to re-group, and that’s exactly what happens. Able to move into attack formation, the Chiss make quick work of the enemy fighters. Ar’lani and Thrawn continue their investigation as the excerpt comes to an end.

In typical Timothy Zahn fashion, the space battle is well-written and easy to follow along with, and I’m really excited to have Thrawn back. It will be really good to explore more about his backstory, Ar’lani, and the Chiss Ascendancy, along with a lot more.

But Chiss names can, of course, be a bit confusing, so Del Rey released the Dramatis Personae to help us out a bit:

Additionally, they gave us a tidbit about Chiss names:

Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising will release in less than a month! I can’t wait for more Thrawn!
