Bob Iger today revealed that the next Star Wars film after The Rise of Skywalker will be from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
When Disney announced the upcoming release dates for three untitled Star Wars films, fans weren’t sure whether the films would be the Benioff and Weiss films, the Rian Johnson films, or a combination of the two. We still don’t know for sure, but what we do know is that the film slated for release on December 16, 2022 will be from Benioff and Weiss.
Though Disney has never said officially how many films Benioff and Weiss will be doing, there have been reports that it’s being viewed as a trilogy. So that’s what’s most likely, but I guess there’s always the chance it could be more of a standalone nature. The two will be working closely with Rian Johnson as he develops his own trilogy, however, and that gives way to speculation that the two stories might be closely tied together. That might allow them to jump back and forth between the two (like, say, premiering Johnson’s first film on the 2024 release date).
I’m easily most excited for Johnson’s trilogy, but I can’t wait to see what Benioff and Weiss do as well!
