At the Celebration panel on Friday for The Rise of Skywalker, Naomi Ackie made her first appearance at Star Wars Celebration and revealed that her character in the film is named Jannah.
We also got our first look at Jannah as well:
“I mean, all I can really say is like the original group are going on like this epic, epic adventure together, and I’m like so excited about where Jannah crosses paths with them,” Ackie said. “It’s wicked. It’s good.”
Some of the more common theories are that Jannah is related to either Lando Calrissian (as his daughter) or Finn (as his sister), and host Stephen Colbert asked Ackie whether Jannah’s father is Lando Calrissian. “Listen,” she responded before laughing, “Lando is a really charming man, so he could have children all over the universe. That’s all I’m saying. Am I right?” So she didn’t deny it, but she also didn’t confirm anything either – she simply made a joke to avoid answering the question, which is pretty much par for the course when it comes to Star Wars discussions like this.
Ackie was also asked about how she found out she had gotten a role in Star Wars.
“I was in bed. I got the call at like 7:00 in the morning,” she said. “My best friend was sleeping downstairs, and my dad was in the house, and I like yelped. My dad ran up the stairs and he just sat at the end of and he just had his hands like on his mouth. And I like open-eye sobbed. I was sobbing. But then, my best friend was sleeping downstairs and I couldn’t tell nobody, so I had to just like, I went downstairs and made a cup of tea and I was like, ‘you’re right babe, everything’s cool, yeah, just a normal day.’ It was incredible. It was mind-blowing. This is mind-blowing. … My dad was telling me to shush, because I was talking too loud on the phone. So he was more telling me to be quiet, because my best friend wouldn’t hear. So yeah, he knew from the beginning. Sorry J.J. He knew [from the beginning].”
Ackie is one of the most significant newcomers to the film, and we got our first look at her at this panel. Fans continue to have plenty of theories about Jannah, and I’m sure that will only continue to intensify as we get closer and closer to the release of the film.
