The official nominations for the Academy Awards were released today, and Solo: A Star Wars Story was nominated for the Oscar in Best Visual Effects.
Solo will be competing with Avengers: Infinity War, Christopher Robin, First Man, and Ready Player One in this category. Industrial Lights & Magic actually worked on three of these five films, as they did visual effects for Infinity War and Ready Player One in addition to Solo.
It’s definitely very cool and well-deserved that Solo has been nominated for best visual effects, because it certainly had plenty of great stuff. In so many of these films the effects are rendered so spectacularly that it’s hard to even differentiate between them, and ILM certainly does fantastic work. I loved the effects in Solo, and I’m happy to see it get recognized – especially since the film was apparently disqualified from consideration for best score. I don’t expect Solo to win in this category, but I do think it’s a great honor and it’s a very deserving recognition.
In other news, two actors who will appear in Star Wars: Episode IX received nominations for other roles in the category of Best Supporting Actor: Adam Driver for BlacKkKlansman and Richard E. Grant for Can You Ever Forgive Me?
