John Williams will compose the theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story may feature new faces in some iconic Star Wars roles, but one legendary figure is returning.  Variety caught up with composer John Williams, who revealed that he will be writing the Han Solo theme for the upcoming film.

It was revealed this summer that John Powell would score the movie, and that is still the plan – but it will be Williams writing the theme for the film’s titular character.  “The present plan is that I’m writing a theme for Han Solo, and John Powell is going to write the score, which he’ll do brilliantly,” Williams told Variety.

Surprisingly, Williams has never written a theme for one of the Star Wars franchise’s biggest legends, Han Solo.  There are plenty of other characters who have gotten their own themes, but not Solo.  The closest there’s been is “Han Solo and the Princess,” the iconic love theme from The Empire Strikes Back for Han and Leia.

It will be really cool to hear what Williams comes up with for Han’s theme for the upcoming movie, and then John Powell will score the rest of the film, no doubt in a similar style to Williams’s music.  “His assignment is something I’m very happy about,” Williams told Variety of Powell’s involvement.  “What I will do is offer this to John, and to [director] Ron Howard, and if all parties are happy with it, then I will be happy. … John [Powell] will complete the score.  He will write all the rest of the themes and all of the other material, which I’m going to be very anxious to hear.”

Williams, of course, is one of the most influential figures in Star Wars history, a man whom George Lucas called “the secret sauce” of Star Wars at this past summer’s 40th anniversary panel.  Williams has scored all eight trilogy films so far, and his music has become as iconic as the characters and visuals that populate the beloved galaxy far, far away.  It seems the standalone films are going away from Williams, as Rogue One did with Michael Giacchino and as Solo is with John Powell.  But it’s certainly fitting that John Williams will do the theme for Han Solo, a character who goes all the way back to the beginning of Star Wars 40 years ago.

Solo stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, alongside Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, and others.  Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard, and written by Star Wars veteran Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jonathan, the film will open on May 25, 2018.
