We’re a week away now from the U.S. release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and I can hardly wait!
We’ve been following all of the TV spots that have been released for the movie, and while many of them are interesting, they’re interesting in the way of giving a new shot or a new line for us to discuss. But few of them have revealed anything significant, and none of them have revealed anything more significant than what one recent TV spot did.
With only a week left to go until the movie we are in full-blown spoiler territory, so it might be best to try to stay off the grid as much as possible for this next week if you don’t want spoilers. And certainly don’t read any further if you don’t want to be spoiled, as while it’s a TV spot authorized by Lucasfilm it nonetheless shows a very significant scene, teasing a huge moment in the film.
Ok, still reading? Well, we’ll look at some other shots from some of the newer TV spots a bit later on, but let’s start with the real significant one… Rey wields a different lightsaber at one point in the film.
Rey wields the cross-blade
We’ve seen shots already of Rey in Supreme Leader Snoke’s throne room. The second trailer showed Rey in the throne room being tortured/interrogated by Snoke, and one of the images released by Entertainment Weekly last month showed Rey standing in the throne room with Kylo Ren in the background. So we know that at some point in the film Rey winds up in front of Snoke with Kylo onboard the Supremacy, but that’s all we knew… until now. A recent TV spot shows Rey reaching out with the force and calling Kylo Ren’s red cross-blade lightsaber to herself and igniting it as the Praetorian Guards snap to attention, presumably ready to confront her. This fits with the training videos we’ve seen that show Rey fighting multiple opponents at once, long presumed to be the Praetorian Guards.
I’m not sure if this confirms (or denies) a possible turn to the dark side for Rey, as perhaps she doesn’t have her own lightsaber and so draws Kylo’s to fight with instead. It would be really cool if Kylo had the Skywalker lightsaber (having confiscated it when Rey was taken prisoner, whether voluntarily or against her will) and ignited it to fight Rey. Whatever happens, though, this seems to be a very significant point in the movie, and it gets me even more excited to see what happens (if that’s even possible!).
“Hey, watch the language!”
One of the recent TV spots also featured a cool scene between Luke Skywalker and his beloved droid, R2-D2. We see R2 and hear him let out several beeps, and then we see Luke saying, “hey, watch the language!” It’s cool to see this interaction between Luke and R2, and I’m sure we’ll get more moments between the two of them in the film.
Plus: it’d confirm that R2 does in fact have a filthy mouth.
We also got several new shots of Poe Dameron’s flight over D’Qar. One of the new spots showed a different view of Poe’s X-Wing rushing toward the First Order Dreadnaught (via the turbo boost) above D’Qar, with the Raddus in the background. Then a different spot showed several new shots of the same sequence (the attack on the Dreadnaught). We see Poe’s X-Wing speed over the surface pursued by TIE Fighters, then we see a close-up shot of Poe in the cockpit flying away from an explosion. In the next shot, we see him turn his X-Wing vertical and fly through some narrow stretch, and the TIE that pursued him crashes and explodes.
It seems that this attack on the Dreadnaught will be a huge and heroic moment for Poe during the Evacuation of D’Qar, and we’ve seen several different shots from that scene (though we still don’t know much about the context or the outcome). And speaking of the Dreadnaught in action, there was a new shot of Resistance transports confronting the massive ship in battle:
Now there are three of them!
The shot of the Porg in the Millennium Falcon cockpit has been shared in plenty of TV spots and trailers so far, and more recently another one of the Porg being pushed aside by Chewbacca and of the Porg flying up against the window have gained traction. But in one of the recent TV spots, we see not one, nor two, but three Porgs in the Falcon cockpit! You can see one to the left of Chewie, one in the center messing around with some of the equipment, and one on top of the chair on the right side. This scene may be while the Falcon is still on Ahch-To, as it’s possible that only one of them really journeys with the heroes off-planet. But either way, it seems like Chewie has his hands full dealing with these creatures.
“I’m from the Resistance. Leia sent me. We need your help.”
In a recent Rey featurette in which Daisy Ridley talks about why to be excited for the movie (as if we needed any more reasons?), we get a shot in which Rey, standing with Chewbacca, tells Luke, “I’m from the Resistance. Leia sent me. We need your help.” It will be interesting to see how this plays out, as this is not the same scene that takes place on the edge of the cliff, so are these the first words spoken, or is this part of a different conversation?
Rose’s first words!
The only thing we had previously heard from Rose was a whispered “wow” under her breath in response to Finn, but in one of the TV spots we hear her speaking. We see the AT-M6 walker fire its big gun, and Rose – flying a ski-speeder – says, “that is a big gun!”
We’ve heard about the executioner storm troopers and even seen figures and other material about them, but I believe this is the first time we’ve seen actual footage of them, as we did in a recent TV spot. They look pretty cool, and I would guess Finn (and probably Rose) come into contact with them during the film.
New shots of key figures
Several of the new spots also showed glimpses of many of the key characters that we haven’t seen before…
Phasma – We see a quick shot of a close-up on Phasma standing amidst fire, presumably standing in the wake of the explosion that we’ve seen before.
Chewie – We see Chewbacca piloting the Millennium Falcon, and based on the looks of it and the lighting, it seems that he’s in the caves on Crait.
Falcon – The iconic ship flies on Crait, and we got a brief new glimpse of it airborne and avoiding TIE Fighter fire before plunging beneath the surface into the caves.
Finn – There’s a new shot of Finn piloting a ski-speeder on Crait, looking very determined as he does so.
Kylo – There’s a new shot of Kylo Ren too – still donning his helmet, so probably earlier in the film – standing in Supreme Leader Snoke’s throne room.
Fathiers – We got our first glimpse of the Fathiers in a recent TV spot, and the Rey featurette showed us figures (most likely Finn and Rose) riding the creatures as they are released – presumably going on to crash the Canto Bight casino.
ONLY ONE MORE WEEK!
