The wait is almost over… The Last Jedi comes out NEXT WEEK!
That’s super exciting, and it’s hard to contain my excitement for this movie. We’ll soon be able to watch it in full, but for now we’re still being inundated with a ton of promotional material, which is awesome! We’ve been looking at any and all new TV spots and trailers and pertinent material that has been released, and it’s time to take another look at the new shots and revelations from some of the more recent spots.
Of course, while this is all promotional material in the sense that it’s been publicly released, if you want to go into the movie completely spoiler-free then it’s best to not read any further.
The Battle of D’Qar
A new international trailer gave us a few new shots of the battle of D’Qar. The first one shows us a group of TIE Fighters rushing to meet Resistance transports, and it looks like you can see a glimpse of the Raddus in the background. Then the second shot shows an X-Wing firing upon and blasting a TIE, and the third shot shows an X-Wing burning and crashing. The evacuation of D’Qar figures to be a pivotal point early in the movie, as the Resistance attempts to flee their base and confronts the First Order above the planet. It seems that many of the key players in the film will be present – such as Leia, Poe, Kylo, etc. – and it also seems that the Raddus and the Supremacy might both play a part.
Fathiers in action!
We’ve long heard about the Fathiers in The Last Jedi, and we saw one in the behind the scenes reel months ago, but the international trailer gave us our first actual look at them in the film! We basically got three brief shots of the Fathiers. The first one shows us a number of them running on Canto Bight at night, and there are riders on one of them – almost certainly Finn and Rose, though perhaps DJ could be with them by this point. The second shot of the Fathiers shows their silhouette in the glass of the Canto Bight casino (our first look at it besides in behind the scenes stuff!) before they break through. And then the third shot shows a number of Fathiers running over tables and causing chaos in the casino.
Months ago, Making Star Wars reported that these Fathiers would be involved in a race sequence in which Finn and Rose ride Fathiers to escape from pursuers. These creatures will play a role in the events that happen on Canto Bight, for sure, and it seems they create quite a scene in the casino.
The Battle of Crait!
The international trailer also gave us some really cool shots of the Battle of Crait – in a scenario that looks quite dire for the Resistance. A number of soldiers are in a trench as TIE Fighters swarm and fire upon it, and as the blasts hit the surface they send the red dust flying. Then the last shot is from the trench, showing a Resistance soldier firing as a number of TIEs fly overhead. These are really cool shots visually, and they do a good job of painting the picture for the Resistance at the battle: they’re in trouble.
Here’s the picture we’ve gotten so far from the footage: the Resistance is holed up in an old Rebel base on Crait, and the First Order attacks. AT-M6 and AT-AT walkers march on the base while TIE Fighters fly overhead, and the Resistance launches ski-speeders to repel the First Order attack. It seems that there are also ground forces too, holding the line in this trench – but in one that probably won’t stand up too well from TIE Fighter fire. It’s very likely that this trench (or one just like it) is the one that we see Poe sliding into in earlier footage.
Speaking of ski-speeders, one of the new TV spots showed us a glimpse of one of them getting blown up by TIE Fighters.
The Falcon flies on Crait
We’ve seen several glimpses of the Millennium Falcon on Crait, whether it be flying above the surface or below it in the salt mines, but one of the new TV spots showed us the Falcon‘s descent into the cave. We see it first from the cockpit perspective as Chewbacca pilots the ship, and then we see the ship turning and flying into the cave in a very cool visual sequence.
Also, in a different TV spot we got a new shot of the Falcon flying above the surface and being pursued by TIE Fighters. This appears to happen before it goes below the surface (note that the satellite dish is still there):
When Porgs fly
A few of the new TV spots have also given us new shots of the porg on the Millennium Falcon. One of the spots showed the porg being thrown against the window of the ship’s cockpit as it flies through the cave on Crait (see the first two images above). Then a different spot, a Disney channel feature on Rose, gave a shot of the porg jumping up onto the dashboard, only to get shoved aside by Chewie.
That TV spot about Rose was primarily a behind the scenes video, but it did feature a few new shots – and gave us our first dialogue from her in the movie. That dialogue wasn’t much, but it was nonetheless the first time we’ve heard her speak. Finn says, “May the force be with you,” and Rose whispers in amazement, “wow.” It plays up what we’ve heard before about Rose – that she looks up to Finn as one of the heroes of the Resistance.
We know that Rose and Finn go on a mission together to infiltrate the First Order, and that leads them into contact with a guy nicknamed DJ. We’ve seen DJ with Finn and Rose undercover before, so this isn’t new, but the Rose spot gave us a shot of the three of them walking while undercover.
Additionally, a training featurette released by Star Wars shows Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, John Boyega, and Kelly Marie-Tran training for the movie, and we see Kelly training for some hand-to-hand combat:
Rey against multiple opponents…
That training featurette also showed Daisy Ridley training for some lightsaber sequences – against multiple opponents all wielding staffs. That’s very interesting, and here’s why: it would be very logical that those opponents would be Praetorian Guards. We know that Rey winds up in Supreme Leader Snoke’s throne room at some point in the film, which makes a confrontation with the guards almost inevitable (unless she turns to the dark side, which I don’t expect). It would be really cool to see her face off against multiple skilled opponents, and many people wonder if Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren would get involved with the fight too (perhaps to Rey’s aid). Whatever happens, these training sequences seem to give more credence to the belief that Rey will fight Snoke’s personal guards.
The training featurette also spent time on Gwendoline Christie’s training for her role as Captain Phasma, who we know sees a much bigger role in this one. The feared First Order captain comes face-to-face with Finn and fights him with her staff, and the spot showed us some new behind the scenes footage of Phasma and Finn’s fight. But we also got a BTS look at a new shot, of Phasma standing amongst several storm troopers when an explosion rocks the area and leaves Phasma bracing for cover. It’s possible that this scene is the beginning of the explosions that provide the backdrop for her fight with Finn.
One of the new TV spots features a couple of shots of Poe, including the one above of his X-Wing blowing up a turret on the top of a Star Destroyer. But the spot also gives us a new line from Poe, said from the cockpit of his X-Wing, that “it’s now or never!”
The majority of new Poe shots, however, come from the TV spot that aired during Disney’s Magical Holiday Celebration. We see Poe’s X-Wing come face-to-face with the First Order’s Dreadnaught during the Battle of D’Qar, and he closes the wings of his fighter as he tells BB-8, “happy beeps here buddy.”
He then says, “BB-8, punch it!” and the droid triggers the turbo-boost, which drives Poe back into his chair and also drives BB-8 back as well. The boost cuts suddenly when the ship gets to the Dreadnaught, and Poe exclaims, “woohoo, that’s got a kick!” It seems to me like in order for Poe’s X-Wing to engage the turbo boost the wings must be closed, which hinders the weapons capability, so it cuts out when Poe is ready to attack the Dreadnaught.
“I won’t let them win!”
That TV spot also gave us a shot of Finn, flying in a ski-speeder on Crait, determinedly saying, “I won’t let them win!” For him, this battle against the First Order is personal, and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep them from winning.
Another new TV spot gave us a shot of Luke we haven’t seen before, of him on Ahch-To slowing turning around. Additionally, a different spot featured new dialogue from Luke saying, “powerful light, powerful darkness.” The dialogue (mainly the first part) is a little weird and doesn’t fully sound like Mark Hamill, but the second part does and most people assume that it’s Luke talking.
