Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie reportedly in the works

Hello there!

Those hoping to see Obi-Wan Kenobi return to the big screen in his own standalone movie might be getting their wish.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit today reported that director Stephen Daldry “is in early talks to direct a Star Wars stand-alone movie centering on Obi-Wan Kenobi,” adding that though the talks are “at the earliest of stages” and that there’s no script, but Daldry would work with Lucasfilm to develop that script if a deal is reached.  Because there’s no script, there’s no actors associated with the film yet, though Ewan McGregor has in the past stated he’s be willing to reprise the role.

Of course, it’s crucial to note that nothing is official yet and that these talks are in very early stages – but it does indicate something significant: that Lucasfilm wants to do an Obi-Wan movie, something that has been a sort-of badly-kept secret but never officially confirmed.  Ewan McGregor is more than willing to done the Jedi robes once again, and the character has become one of the most popular and beloved figures in the Star Wars universe.  It makes perfect sense for Lucasfilm to pursue this project.  It’s important that they cast McGregor in the role, but it would be an absolute shock if the company decides to do a movie about the character without having McGregor as Kenobi, especially since the time gap would be no matter – if the film releases in 2020 (a year after Episode IX), it would be 15 years after Revenge of the Sith, which in Star Wars years would make McGregor the perfect age to play Obi-Wan during his years as a hermit on Tatooine.

If Lucasfilm does indeed green-light an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film and cast Ewan McGregor to reprise his role, I’ll be ecstatic.  It would likely be the third standalone film that Star Wars does, behind last year’s Rogue One and next year’s Han Solo movie.  Additionally, Borys Kit reports that “Lucasfilm is also considering movies centering on Yoda and bounty hunter Boba Fett, among other characters.”  Variety’s Justin Kroll writes that “some of the other standalones in development include a Jabba the Hutt story and a Boba Fett movie.”  There are so many options to explore in the Star Wars universe, which is good news for fans – meaning there will be plenty of material for new movies for several years.  And while many want to explore new eras (like the Old Republic), the opportunity to do a film about one of the most beloved characters with the incredibly popular actor returning shouldn’t be passed up.

One more movie with Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi?  Yes please!
