Star Wars’ fan favorite rogue archeologist, Doctor Chelli Aphra, is returning with a brand new comic series set after the events of Return of the Jedi, which will see her team up with Luke Skywalker.
The new series, Doctor Aphra – Chaos Agent, is written by Cherish Chen with art by Gabriel Guzman. It’s set in the New Republic period, which means we’ll be exploring a brand new time period for Aphra’s actions. The first issue, which releases June 18, will have Aphra joining forces with Luke to hunt for a rare artifact.
The relationship between Aphra and Luke has already been established with some run-ins during the original trilogy (in the comics), and a run-in not long after the Battle of Endor in the recent Battle of Jakku comic series. There’s a history there to draw from, but it also makes a lot of sense for this team-up to happen in the post-Endor galaxy. We know very little about what Luke was up to in this time period, besides the fact that he spent a considerable amount of time exploring the galaxy collecting Jedi relics and learning about their history. Considering the fact that Aphra is, in a sense, the Star Wars version of Indiana Jones, her assisting Luke on some of these journeys would make logical sense. Add to that the fact that she had a complicated and extensive relationship working with Darth Vader, and, well, there’s much she has to offer.
Aphra has become a mainstay in Star Wars comics over the past decade, so it’s no surprise that she’s getting a new ongoing series. It also marks yet another step in the franchise beginning to explore the New Republic period through the comics, alongside the recent Battle of Jakku mini-series and the upcoming Star Wars main line.
