Andor is in the midst of a highly successful first season, which will be wrapping up on Wednesday, November 23. It turns out that’s just two days after season two will begin filming.
Showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed to Collider recently that season two of Andor will begin fimling on November 21 in London. Gilroy said that he’ll be heading to London for the first shot but then heading back to the United States for the holiday.
Gilroy also told Collider that Ariel Kleiman, Janus Metz, and Alonso Ruizpalacios will be the three directors on the show’s second season, while Dan Gilroy and Beau Willimon will be returning as writers. They will be joined by Tom Bissell, a newcomer to the writing team. Gilroy said that Bissell is a great writer and a big Star Wars fan, and noted that was wanted since they’ll be leading right into Rogue One.
So it will be a different team creating the second season of the show, though it will have a consistent leadership at the top with Gilroy’s involvement. The first season has been fantastic, and that means that expectations for season two will be even higher. The second season will be the final one for the series, as the plan is for season two to lead directly into the events of Rogue One. So in many ways these two seasons of Andor are serving as the prequel telling us how we got to Rogue One, which is itself a prequel telling us how we got to A New Hope.
The fact that it’s just now beginning filming later this month is an indication that we won’t be getting season two anytime soon, but it should be worth the wait. And in the meantime, we’ll be getting several other shows on Disney+ next year, including The Mandalorian season three, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew.
