LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga isn’t releasing until spring 2022, but it looks amazing

Gamescom 2021 is here, and with it comes a long-awaited look at LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. And there’s both good news and bad news.

Let’s start with the bad news: the game won’t be releasing until spring 2022.

The good news: the game looks amazing.

A new gameplay trailer was released, and this game looks gorgeous. Here’s the trailer:

This game features all nine films from the Skywalker Saga and is the biggest and most ambitious LEGO game ever made. The stunning scope of the game is seen in this trailer, both from the variety of levels and locations and films, but also from a brief glimpse at the galaxy map. The game will continue the hub world locations, which allows the players to explore these worlds apart from the structured levels that go along with each film. There are a staggering 19 worlds that are listed by name on this galaxy map as planets you can apparently travel to and explore, plus five more that are not listed by name and have “???” instead. Presumably this means that the locations have not been unlocked yet, and there are some notable exclusions (like Coruscant, Mustafar, Jakku, Takodana, Exegol, etc.) that will surely be in the game. Regardless of the specific locations, however, it gives us an idea of the massive nature of this game.

And I’m particularly excited to visit so many of these locations that have not appeared in LEGO games before, as well as new levels and characters and movies (The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker have never been included in a LEGO Star Wars game). I’m a huge fan of the franchise and I absolutely can’t wait for this game, as it looks fantastic.

But, again, it won’t be releasing for a while still. The trailer ended with a new release timeframe, saying spring 2022. That’s still not exactly specific, as next spring could mean a fairly wide range of times. One might guess that May 4th would be an obvious possibility, but we simply don’t know. That’s a little disappointing, but at least we have a general timeframe. This game, of course, was originally going to be released late in 2020. Then it was pushed back to spring 2021. Then it was pushed back indefinitely, and now we’ve learned that it’s coming spring 2022. So it’ll probably be close to two years later than originally planned, and the lack of clarity and communication has been extremely frustrating at times. At least now we have some sort of guideline on what’s happening.

And at the end of the day, if the game is great, it’ll all prove to be worth it. I’m hoping that’s the case, and everything we’ve actually seen from it so far lends toward that conclusion as well.
