The ongoing War of the Bounty Hunters crossover comic event is bringing together tons of different bounty hunters and crime syndicates all into one massive story, and it seems that basically every bounty hunter we know is alive during this period (and even some we didn’t, like Durge) is wanting to get in on the bounty for Boba Fett and Han Solo.
And that also includes brand new bounty hunters we’ve never met before as well. StarWars.com recently introduced us to Deva Lompop, a new hunter who will make her debut in one of the one-shot comics, Jabba the Hutt #1, written by Justina Ireland and drawn by Iban Coello, which is set to release on July 21.
According to the article, Deva Lompop is a Shani, a new alien species that have very long life-spans – so long, in fact, that Deva has been around since the High Republic era. The Shani are described as “a people with a long life-span that the Hutts consider to be the original bounty hunters of the galaxy.” In this issue, Jabba the Hutt #1, Deva is “specifically requested by Jabba the Hutt himself,” and presumably that means that Jabba is enlisting Deva to help him get his prize. We are told that, since Deva has been around for centuries, she was originally a bounty hunter but has since moved on to other lines of work – before being pulled back to her old ways in this storyline.
And, based on a tease from author Justina Ireland, “for High Republic fans they should watch for Deva in upcoming works.” That seems to be confirming that we will actually be seeing Deva Lompop show up in High Republic storytelling, especially since Ireland is one of the writers for the era, and that makes sense too, as it’s surely more than just coincidental to introduce a character from this other period of storytelling.
She’s got an awesome look, too, as you can see from the art and design from Iban Coello:

I think this is really cool. There are few characters who could show up in both War of the Bounty Hunters and in the High Republic, but now they’re introducing another one who could – and seemingly will. But I’m also really interested in the description that the Hutts view the Shani as the galaxy’s original bounty hunters. I wonder if that’s something that will get explored at some point, as even if it’s not totally true (and only is from a certain point of view), it’s cool to get some hints and glimpses as the origins of such a profession.
There are plenty of familiar bounty hunters showing up in War of the Bounty Hunters, and I think it’s cool that there are some new ones too. The design for Deva Lompop is fantastic, and she sounds totally fascinating too. I’m excited to see her show up!
