The Mandalorian will soon become a multi-series initiative, it seems.
As revealed at the Disney Investor Day by Lucasfilm President Kathy Kennedy, the showrunners of The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, are currently developing two new spinoff series from the show: Rangers of the New Republic, and Ahsoka. Then later, The Book of Boba Fett was announced. All three of these shows will be set during the same time period as The Mandalorian.
And, very interestingly, it seems they’ll all be connected. Here’s what Kennedy said: “Set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, these inter-connected shows, along with future stories, will excite new audiences, embrace our most passionate fans, and will culminate in a climactic story event.”
Ok, so that definitely has my attention. It certainly sounds like all three of these stories (and maybe more to come!) will be connected and will converge at some point in the future. That reminds me of the way the Marvel Cinematic Universe works, and maybe it’s not surprising that Marvel veteran Jon Favreau would take a similar approach here. What I’m really wondering is what this climactic story event could be?
Since no Rebels sequel was announced among the tons of new content, I’m beginning to wonder if this Ahsoka series will serve to bridge some of those gaps? I find it curious that there would be no Rebels sequel coming anytime soon, so we’ll have to see. But that, combined with the name-drop of Grand Admiral Thrawn, has me wondering if all of these stories will converge along some of those lines. We know that some New Republic pilots realize there’s something going on in the Outer Rim, but that the government doesn’t take it too seriously. We know that Ahsoka Tano is searching for Thrawn, who apparently has returned. And we know that the return of Thrawn opens tons of doors for future stories. Could all three of these shows be heading toward a sort of Heir to the Empire-esque Thrawn Crisis? Or could we see an effort to re-take Mandalore, with Ahsoka involved in another siege of the planet? Or maybe could we even see both of those, combined?
If you can’t tell, I’m simply speculating here. But I do find it incredibly intriguing that it seems The Mandalorian is now spinning off other shows that will all be inter-connected and leading to a massive, climactic event. If done well – and I trust Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau to do it well – this could be epic.
I’m not sure where it all may lead, but I’m eager to find out. Thrawn would be a great addition, but I’m also hoping that, by extension, we’ll get to see Ezra, too.
