*** Be warned that MINOR SPOILERS ARE AHEAD, so if you haven’t watched the most recent episode of The Mandalorian, proceed with caution. ***
If you’ve watched the last episode of the second season of The Mandalorian, I hope you watched all the way through the credits!
For the first time, the show utilized a post-credits scene to tease an upcoming story, and at the end of it, a title card flashed saying that “The Book of Boba Fett” is coming December 2021!
The post-credits scene took us to Jabba’s Palace on Tatooine, where Bib Fortuna apparently survived and sits on the throne, living in luxury. Fennec Shand then walks in, killing Fortuna’s guards, and is followed by Boba Fett. Fortuna is surprised to see Fett alive, having thought he was dead, but mentioned that he’d heard rumors. Fett shoots and kills Fortuna and ascends to the throne himself, sitting down upon it, while Shand grabs a drink and sits on the arm of the chair next to him.
That presumably gives us an indication of where this new series could be going. We’d been hearing rumors for a while now that there was a Boba Fett spinoff series coming, and now it’s confirmed. We don’t have any more details right now (I’m hoping we’ll get some on Monday), but based on this post-credits scene, I’d say that it’ll probably bring back Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen, and it very well might give us a look at Fett operating as a crime lord out of Jabba’s Palace. That would be really cool to see.
The big question that people have (and again, I hope we get some clarity on Monday) is about what this means for the future of The Mandalorian. People are wondering if The Book of Boba Fett is actually season three of the show or a new spinoff series altogether. It’s a valid question, particularly since Kathy Kennedy said at the Disney Investor Day that the “next chapter” of The Mandalorian is coming December 2021. But remember, she was speaking in the context of other spinoff shows, so it’s possible that the “next chapter” she spoke of is actually this Boba Fett series, while remaining an altogether distinct series.
One thing I don’t think it’ll be, however, is simply the next season of this current show. The last episode of season two set up some very clear and very interesting story threads for where they may be going moving forward, and I wrote about it briefly in my full-spoiler review. Suffice to say that I don’t know when season three will be coming, but I’m confident there will be a season three, and that it’ll be different from this Fett series.
But will this series be one of the tie-in series like Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka, which will apparently converge with The Mandalorian for an epic storytelling event? I think that makes sense. And really, it’s all a credit to the second season of The Mandalorian for so effectively bringing Boba Fett back to make us really excited about a new series focusing on him.
