Get ready to finally visit the Eye of Webbish Bog, because an upcoming Star Wars comic will be taking us there!
The soliciations for upcoming Marvel comics were recently released, and Darth Vader #8, which is written by Greg Pak and coming in December, will feature Vader traveling to Mustafar and encountering the Eye of Webbish Bog. Here’s how the description reads:
• Hungry for vengeance after his brutal punishment at the hands of THE EMPEROR, can DARTH VADER uncover his master’s secrets in the depths of MUSTAFAR?
• Stripped of his greatest weapons, can the dark lord survive the fire and the EYE?
• Or will he be overcome as the EYE turns Vader’s every question back to his own terrible secrets?
These descriptions rarely give us too many details about the issue, but try to raise the intrigue, and I think this does it well. We know from the most recent issue (and other solicitations) that Vader is going to be punished by Palpatine, but here we read that Vader then heads off to Mustafar to try to learn Palpatine’s secrets – including an encounter with the Eye of Webbish Bog, which appears on the cover as well.
If you don’t know what I’m talking about with the Eye of Webbish Bog, that’s ok! The Eye was developed for The Rise of Skywalker and actually was filmed, as Kylo Ren was supposed to encounter it on Mustafar while trying to retrieve Vader’s wayfinder. The scene was ultimately cut from the film, but made it into the novelization. The Eye basically was a spider-like creature sitting on a giant baby-like creature’s head, and the two were joined together in a symbiotic relationship. It dwelled in a lake on Mustafar and served as a protector of Vader’s wayfinder (among other things), and it challenged Kylo Ren as he sought it.
The Eye of Webbish Bog is incredibly strange, yet feels very Star Wars-y. Without having seen the deleted scene from TROS, I think I can understand why they decided to cut it, but I enjoyed the sequence in the novelization. And regardless, I’m really excited about the opportunity to explore it more in this comic coming up, and I wonder if that could lead to a further connection with The Rise of Skywalker. Since the novelization makes it sound like the Eye is guarding Vader’s wayfinder, I wonder if we could see some further exploration of that wayfinder in this comic? I think that would be really cool!
