This isn’t a huge update, but it’s still one worth noting: Taika Waititi has begun writing his Star Wars film!
In a recent interview with BBC about a variety of subjects, Waititi was asked about Star Wars and he simply revealed that he’s writing the film now.
It was announced in May that Waititi will write and direct an upcoming Star Wars theatrical film, which was pretty exciting. Waititi is probably best known for his work on Thor: Ragnarok in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the critically acclaimed Jojo Rabbit (which won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2020). He’s also writing and directing the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder (a sequel to Ragnarok), and he has worked on The Mandalorian as a director (of the final episode of season one) and as a voice actor (for IG-11).
Per the previous announcement, Waititi is writing the Star Wars film with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and so it sounds like that’s currently in progress.
So while that’s not a huge reveal, what particularly interests me is the timing. If he’s already beginning writing it, then it’s probably going to be coming within the next few years – so in other words I wonder if it could be the next Star Wars film to be released in theaters? The release date for that next film has been adjusted to December 22, 2023, and it sounds like that could possibly line up with Waititi’s schedule. There are plenty of projects in various stages of development at Lucasfilm, but I couldn’t help but wonder about timing when Waititi gave this update.
