Though it doesn’t come as a surprise and was completely expected, there’s a bit of bad news that was announced by Star Wars today: Celebration 2020 Anaheim has been cancelled.
Originally scheduled to be held in Anaheim, California, on August 27-30 later this summer, the global COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of the popular fan gathering. If you were planning on going, the Celebration website has the details on the ticket transfer or refund options, so check it out here. But at the time of cancellation, it was also announced that Star Wars Celebration will return to Anaheim in 2022, taking place at the Anaheim Convention Center on August 18-21, 2022.
It’s a bit disappointing that we’ll have to wait until 2022 for another Celebration, as that will mean over two years without one. But I always wondered whether 2021 would be a year off for the convention anyway. If you remember, the next Star Wars theatrical release is coming in December 2022, so there will be a lot to talk about in August 2022 at Celebration Anaheim. By that time, we’ll surely know the direction of the future of Star Wars’s future, so it’ll be really interesting and exciting.
So while I’m disappointed it’s not going to be happening this summer, I do wonder whether there will be some sort of online presence that still garners some excitement and hype in the meantime while we wait for 2022, as there’s still plenty of Star Wars content on the way!
